Funding Options

Upskilling in tech is an investment — and in the Netherlands there are several ways to make it more affordable. Explore the most common funding routes used by Dutch learners and employers, and find the option that fits your situation. Not sure where to start? Book a call and we’ll help you map out a clear plan.

At Code Labs Academy, we believe tech education should be accessible.

That’s why we don’t just teach in-demand skills — we also help you navigate realistic funding routes in the Netherlands. Depending on your situation, you may be able to fund training through your employer (learning budget), a sector Training & Development Fund (O&O fonds), the government’s SLIM schemes for employers, or support via UWV or your municipality.

Eligibility and conditions differ per route and can change over time. Our team can help you understand what’s possible and what you’ll need to apply.

Employer Sponsorship & Learning Budgets

Many Dutch employers offer an annual learning budget (opleidingsbudget) or L&D support as part of professional development. If you’re employed, check with your manager or HR to see whether your training can be covered in full or in part — especially when the skills directly support your role (e.g., Web Development, Cyber Security, UX/UI Design, or Data Science & AI).

Training & Development Funds (O&O fondsen) via your CAO

If your employer works under a collective labour agreement (CAO), your sector may have an O&O fund that reimburses (part of) the costs for training, certifications, or career development. These funds differ per sector, so it’s worth checking what’s available in your industry and what training providers are accepted.

SLIM Subsidy for SMEs

The Dutch government’s SLIM scheme helps SMEs and SME partnerships stimulate learning and development at work. Employers can use it for activities like career advice, developing training plans, and creating a stronger learning culture inside the organisation. This route is typically applied for by the employer rather than the individual learner.

SLIM Scholingssubsidie for Shortage Sectors

In addition to SLIM for SMEs, there is also SLIM scholingssubsidie aimed at supporting training in socially crucial sectors with staffing shortages. Funding is tied to eligible courses and is generally applied for by an employer or collective (for example, via sector initiatives).

UWV Training & Reintegration Support

If you’re registered with UWV or receiving certain benefits, training can sometimes be part of a reintegration path — and in some cases you may be able to follow an education programme while keeping your benefit. The exact options depend on your personal situation, so it’s best to discuss this directly with your UWV contact.

DUO Lifelong Learning Credit (Levenlanglerenkrediet)

If you are under 57 and taking a recognised programme in HBO/university (or a full-time BOL programme in MBO), you may be eligible for DUO’s lifelong learning credit. This is a loan to help pay tuition or course fees. Not all training providers and courses qualify, so you should check eligibility with DUO.

Municipality Support & Regional Advice (RMT / Leerwerkloket)

Some municipalities and regional organisations can support people who need to reskill or upskill (for example through coaching, guidance, and sometimes training support). Regional Mobility Teams (RMTs) and local learning-and-work desks can also help you find the right route for your situation.

How To Get Started

Want to upskill in tech from the Netherlands, but unsure how to finance it? Here’s a simple way to approach it.

Our team can also help you prepare the right questions and documents for your employer, a sector fund, or an advisor — so you don’t waste time on the wrong route.

1. Identify your best funding route

Are you employed, self-employed, or currently job-seeking? That determines whether employer sponsorship, an O&O fund, SLIM-related support, UWV guidance, or DUO credit is most realistic.

2. Check eligibility and timing

Most schemes have conditions, application windows, and required documents. We’ll help you understand what to ask, what proof you may need, and how to plan around deadlines.

3. Choose your bootcamp and start learning

Pick the programme and schedule that fits your goals and availability — then focus on building practical, job-relevant skills through live classes and hands-on projects.
