Study Support & Funding in Sweden

How to explore CSN student finance and Swedish upskilling support options for your online bootcamp.

What is Swedish student finance (CSN)?

CSN (Centrala studiestödsnämnden) administers Swedish study support. For many learners, support can include a grant (bidrag) and/or a loan (lån) to help cover costs while you study.

If you’re changing careers or upskilling mid-career, you may also be eligible for public transition-study support (omställningsstudiestöd) for studies that strengthen your position in the labour market.

Does it cover full tuition?

Support levels and what costs are covered depend on your eligibility and the type of studies you plan to take. In many cases, CSN support is mainly used to support your living costs during studies. If you’re unsure which route applies to you, our team can help you understand what documentation you may need for your application.

Who can apply?

Common public funding routes in Sweden include:

  • CSN student finance (studiemedel)

If you meet the conditions for Swedish student finance and are studying at an eligible pace, you may be able to receive a grant and/or loan during your studies.

  • Other Swedish study supports

    • Transition Study Support (omställningsstudiestöd)

For eligible adults who have worked for several years and want to study to strengthen their position in the labour market. This route often involves guidance and confirmation from a transition organisation (omställningsorganisation).

    • Study Start Support (studiestartsstöd)

A grant aimed at unemployed people who want to begin studies (typically at basic or upper-secondary level). Your municipality (kommun) assesses eligibility and you don’t apply for this support directly via CSN.

    • Employer-sponsored upskilling

Some employers and collective agreements support training and reskilling. If you’re employed, ask your employer or union about available study support and development budgets.

How can I apply?

1

Decide which funding route fits your situation: CSN student finance (studiemedel), transition-study support (omställningsstudiestöd), study start support (studiestartsstöd), or employer sponsorship.

2

Check requirements and start your application via csn.se (CSN’s official website).

3

If you’re applying for transition-study support, contact your transition organisation (often via your employer or union) to understand what confirmations and documents are required before submitting your CSN application.

4

If you’re exploring study start support, contact your municipality (kommun) for an assessment — if you’re eligible, the municipality initiates the process.
