Funding with IEFP Training Vouchers in Portugal

A practical guide to applying for the Cheque-Formação (and other relevant IEFP measures) to support your upskilling and career switch into tech.

What is the IEFP Cheque-Formação?

The Cheque-Formação is an IEFP support measure designed to help people in Portugal improve their skills and employability through certified training.

You choose an eligible course delivered by a certified training provider and submit your application via IEFP Online. Depending on your profile, you may also be covered by the Cheque-Formação + Digital, which focuses on strengthening digital skills.

How much does it cover?

For the Cheque-Formação, funding can cover eligible training costs up to a maximum of €175 per person per calendar year, or up to €500 per year for long-term unemployed applicants (subject to IEFP rules and eligibility).

Who can apply?

Eligibility is defined by IEFP and may vary by measure. For the Cheque-Formação, the key requirements typically include:

  • Aged 16+

The Cheque-Formação is aimed at people aged 16 or over, including both employed (employee or self-employed) and unemployed applicants (subject to IEFP conditions).

  • Fit into one of these categories:

    • Employed (employee or self-employed)

If you’re working in Portugal (employed or self-employed), you may be eligible to use the Cheque-Formação to upskill through certified training.

    • Unemployed and registered with IEFP

Unemployed applicants usually need to be registered with IEFP for a minimum period (e.g., 90 consecutive days for Cheque-Formação). Additional conditions may apply, such as your qualification level and alignment with your personal qualification plan.
