Japan’s Education and Training Benefit (教育訓練給付金) is a government program that reimburses a portion of eligible training fees after you complete a designated course.
Eligibility depends on your Employment Insurance (雇用保険) history and the type of course designation. Procedures and payments are handled through Hello Work (ハローワーク), and you generally pay tuition first, then apply for reimbursement after completion (or at set intervals, depending on the benefit type).
Depending on the designation, you may receive 20% (up to ¥100,000), 50% (up to ¥250,000), or up to 80% (annual cap ¥640,000) of eligible costs. Caps, timelines, and additional conditions apply — confirm the latest details with Hello Work before you start.
Eligibility is determined by Hello Work based on your Employment Insurance status and enrollment history. Common requirements include:
You typically need to be enrolled in Employment Insurance at the time the course starts, or be within 1 year of leaving a job (in some cases the eligibility window can be extended).
Many applicants need at least 1 year of Employment Insurance coverage (some programs require 2+ years). If you’ve received the benefit before, additional rules may apply.
Only courses designated by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare qualify. Check the official course search system before applying.
Reimbursement is paid after course completion (or at set milestones), and claims must be submitted within the required period.
Use the official Education and Training Benefit course search system to check whether your course is designated: Course Search System.
Before your course starts, visit your local Hello Work office to confirm eligibility and required paperwork (some benefit types require procedures before the start date).
Apply for one of our bootcamps and schedule a chat with us — we’ll share program details, timelines, and the documents we can provide to support your application.
Complete the course and obtain proof of completion from the training provider.
Submit your benefit claim to Hello Work within the required deadline (often within 1 month after the relevant completion/milestone date).
If you qualify for additional payments (depending on the designation and your post-training situation), follow the additional steps Hello Work provides.
