Crédito formação: a loan, not a grant

This page is about borrowing money and repaying it with interest. Portugal's public training funding runs through IEFP and providers certified by DGERT, so none of it reaches a school teaching online from abroad. Before any bank there is cheaper money: your employer, and our own interest-free monthly instalments, up to 60 payments made directly to Code Labs Academy. The loan comes last, for the person who genuinely needs the fee as a single lump sum.

What is actually available in Portugal, cheapest money first

Start with the part a page selling you credit would bury: crédito formação is a loan. A bank lends you the money, you pay Code Labs Academy in full, and then you repay the bank with interest for years afterwards, whatever happens to your job search. It is not a grant, not a subsidy, and not a Portuguese equivalent of the German training voucher or the employer training duties people read about in the Nordics. Portugal's public training money is real, but it is spent through IEFP and it goes to providers certified by DGERT or to Portuguese higher education institutions. Cheque-Formação, Cheque-Formação + Digital and the regional measures in the Azores and Madeira all apply that same provider test, and a German school teaching live online does not pass it. So the honest order of options here is not the one a lender would put in front of you. Ask your employer first, because company money is the only money that costs you nothing: work-related training is a normal business purchase and we invoice the company directly. Second, price our own payment plan. It is interest free, up to 60 monthly payments made directly to Code Labs Academy, so the total you pay is the course fee and nothing more, and there is a 5% discount if you pay the full fee before the course starts. Any loan, at any rate, costs more than that for the same tuition. If the monthly instalments fit your budget, take them and you can stop reading here. A loan earns its place in one situation: you need the whole fee, or the fee plus living costs, as cash in your hand. In that case crédito formação is a genuinely useful instrument, because Portuguese banks sell purpose-built training loans and there is no accreditation gate on us at all. Crediformação Caixa from Caixa Geral de Depósitos is the clearest example: it covers professional, technical and specialisation courses (cursos técnico profissionais, de formação, de especialização), it explicitly finances courses taken in Portugal and abroad (em Portugal e no estrangeiro), and it lends from EUR 5,000 to EUR 60,000, a range that brackets our fees of EUR 5,000 to EUR 17,000 exactly. One wrinkle to know before you walk into a branch: some lenders, Cofidis and BPI among them, word their preferential training rate around courses taught by higher education institutions (Instituições de Ensino Superior). A private bootcamp is not one, so with those lenders you may be moved to an ordinary crédito pessoal at a higher rate rather than turned away. That is a pricing difference, not a wall, and knowing it in advance is what lets you compare offers instead of accepting the first one you are shown.

Frequently asked questions

Is crédito formação government funding?

No, and it matters that you know that before you sign. Crédito formação is a consumer loan sold by banks and credit institutions with the purpose written on it. The money is yours to repay with interest over the term you agree, and nothing about it is subsidised by the state. If you arrived here after reading about training vouchers in Germany or employer training duties in the Nordics, Portugal has no equivalent that reaches a provider like us: public training money runs through IEFP and is spent with DGERT-certified providers or Portuguese higher education institutions. That is why this page puts your employer and our own interest-free instalments ahead of any bank.

Will a Portuguese bank lend for an online course taught from Germany?

In principle yes, because the loan is made to you, not to the school. There is no approved-provider list in private credit, and the training products are not restricted to Portuguese institutions: Crediformação Caixa at CGD explicitly covers professional, technical and specialisation courses taken in Portugal or abroad, which describes exactly what you would be buying. Expect the bank to ask for proof of enrolment and an invoice or quote, all of which we issue. Our AZAV certification is a German quality mark with no legal standing in Portugal, so no lender will ask for it, though it is a fair thing to mention if someone at the counter wants to know who we are. What any individual bank decides on your application is still its own call.

Is borrowing cheaper than paying Code Labs Academy in instalments?

No, and we would rather say so than have you work it out after signing. Our plan is interest free, up to 60 monthly payments made directly to Code Labs Academy, so the total you pay is the course fee. A loan costs the fee plus interest, however good the rate. The case for a loan is a different one: it gives you cash, which a tuition plan does not. If you need to cover living costs during an intensive cohort, or you want the fee settled in one payment to take the 5% upfront discount, borrowing can be the right tool. If you only need to spread the tuition, it is not.

What if the bank refuses me, or only offers a worse product?

Both happen, and they are different problems. A refusal is usually about your file rather than about the course: income that leaves too little headroom, existing credit commitments, or a short history with the bank. Ask what tipped the decision, because that tells you whether a smaller amount, a longer term or a different bank would change the answer, and lenders assess independently of each other. Being offered a plain crédito pessoal instead of the training product is not a refusal at all, it is a price: compare the TAEG against another bank's offer before accepting. And a refusal does not close the course to you. Our interest-free instalment plan involves no lender and no credit decision, and your employer may still say yes.

What happens if I lose my job or do not finish the course?

The loan stands. It is an ordinary consumer credit agreement, unrelated to your future earnings, so the repayment schedule does not move because the course or the job search went differently than you hoped. That is the real cost of having cash in hand, and it should be a deliberate choice rather than an afterthought. Borrow the amount you could still service in a bad six months, not the amount you can service in a good one, and if your situation changes, speak to the bank before you miss a payment. Our own instalment plan carries the same seriousness as a commitment but no interest and no third party, which is one more reason to price it first.

Can I get any of the cost back through my IRS return?

Possibly a small part of it. Education and training expenses are deductible in the IRS return at 30% of the amount spent, capped at EUR 800 per household per year, so at best it returns a fraction of a bootcamp fee and never the loan interest. Whether your specific invoice qualifies depends on how the training is classified and how the expense is reported, and a foreign provider adds a step to that, so confirm it with your accountant before you count on it. Treat it as a rebate you might receive the following year, not as part of the financing plan, and never delay a decision waiting for it.
