France Travail's AIF: what it funds, and why not with us
The aide individuelle à la formation is a last-resort grant. Your France Travail adviser decides it case by case, it pays tuition (commonly up to around EUR 8,000) and it goes straight to the training provider, never to you. It cannot pay for a Code Labs Academy course, for two independent reasons this page sets out plainly. You will also find how AIF actually works in 2026, so you can use it where it is possible, and what does finance a career change when you are out of work.
AIF in 2026: a last-resort grant, decided one file at a time
The aide individuelle à la formation is what France Travail reaches for when nothing else can pay. "Last resort" is not rhetoric here, it is the definition of the scheme: before committing an AIF, your adviser has to check that no other channel covers your project, whether that is your regional council's training programme, an OPCO if your situation attaches you to one, an action de formation conventionnée already bought by France Travail, or a préparation opérationnelle à l'emploi where an employer is recruiting behind it. So your first job is not to fill in a form. It is to find out what else could cover you, because AIF only starts where those channels stop. When it is granted it pays pedagogical fees, commonly up to around EUR 8,000, paid directly to the training organisation and never to the individual. In 2026 there is no national scale: budgets are held at agency level, decisions are made case by case, and approval is never automatic. The conditions générales de financement have also been revised, and the definition of pedagogical fees now leaves out registration, examination and equipment costs. Now to your question. AIF cannot pay for a Code Labs Academy course, and two separate locks stand in the way, either of which would be enough on its own. The first is plumbing: the provider has to sign up to France Travail's conditions générales de financement and issue the AIF quote through the Kairos platform, and access to Kairos requires a French numéro de déclaration d'activité (NDA). No NDA, no Kairos, and without Kairos there is simply no route by which the payment could reach us. The second lock is about format: for distance or online training the same conditions additionally require a certifying course registered in the RNCP or the Répertoire spécifique, delivered by a Qualiopi-certified organisation. We fit neither box, and our German AZAV certification has no French equivalent: it opens neither Kairos nor Qualiopi. The next part deserves saying out loud, because it is true and it matters. In 2026 AIF gives priority to certifying courses aimed at shortage occupations, and "numérique" is named explicitly among them. In other words, your plan is exactly the kind of plan the scheme wants to fund. What blocks it is neither the subject you picked nor the quality of your thinking: it is an access condition that applies to the provider. That distinction is not cosmetic, because "your idea is wrong" and "this particular door does not open for this particular school" are not the same sentence, and only one of them is accurate. One more thing worth separating: AIF is not the CPF, even though both run into the same French registration requirement when they reach us. The CPF is an account that belongs to you, the rights are already yours, the booking happens online and nobody has to approve your plan. AIF is the opposite: no accrued rights, no balance, a discretionary grant an adviser gives or refuses depending on your project and their agency's budget. The CPF detail is in our guide to the CPF and bootcamps. The rest of this page does two things: it explains AIF precisely enough for you to use it where it works, and it says what really pays for a career change when you are a registered jobseeker, including where the answer is uncomfortable.
Jobseekers registered with France Travail, plus beneficiaries of the contrat de sécurisation professionnelle (CSP) after an economic redundancy. Registration is the entry condition: AIF does not exist outside a pathway followed by an adviser.
Your adviser has to validate the project in your PPAE before you enrol. A course you have already started, or paid for yourself and presented afterwards, is not covered retroactively. The order of events is the part people get wrong.
AIF only comes in as a last resort. Your adviser looks at the other channels first: the regional council's programme, an OPCO, an action de formation conventionnée, a préparation opérationnelle à l'emploi. If one of them can fund your project, that is the one that applies and the AIF request stops there.
The condition that blocks you here is not about you, it is about the provider. It has to sign up to France Travail's conditions générales de financement and file its quote in Kairos, which requires a French numéro de déclaration d'activité. A foreign provider without an NDA has no access to the platform, so there is no payment route at all.
For distance learning there is an extra requirement: the conditions générales additionally demand a certifying course registered in the RNCP or the Répertoire spécifique, delivered by a Qualiopi-certified organisation. That criterion rules us out independently of the first one.
So our courses cannot be funded by AIF, and the two reasons are independent: even if one fell away, the other would still stand. Better to read it here than to discover it after an agency appointment and three weeks of processing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for a Code Labs Academy course with an AIF?
No, and two independent reasons block it. The first is plumbing: for France Travail to pay for a course, the provider has to file an AIF quote in the Kairos platform, having signed up to the conditions générales de financement, and Kairos access requires a French numéro de déclaration d'activité. We do not have one, so there is no route by which the money could reach us, however enthusiastic your adviser is about your plan. The second is the online rule: for distance learning the same conditions additionally require a certifying course registered in the RNCP or the Répertoire spécifique, delivered by a Qualiopi-certified organisation. We do not meet that either. Even if one of the two locks disappeared, the other would still stop the file, which is why we would rather you read this before booking an appointment about it.
My adviser thinks my project makes sense. Can they make an exception?
No, and it is not a question of goodwill. An adviser has real discretion over your project: the target job, how well the training fits it, the state of the local labour market, whether to commit the agency's budget at all. On that ground they genuinely decide, and approval is never automatic. What they have no discretion over is the payment route: the quote is filed in Kairos or it is not filed, and there is no procedure for paying a provider that is not in the system. Asking for an exception means asking someone to work around a tool rather than bend a judgement call. Spend the appointment on what they can actually influence instead: validating your project in the PPAE and keeping your benefit while you study.
My AIF request was refused. What now?
Start by getting the reason, in writing if you can, because the common reasons lead in different directions. If the refusal is about the scheme being subsidiary, another channel is supposed to cover you: ask which one, and ask for help activating it. If it is about the agency's budget or the priority given to certifying courses in shortage occupations, a reworked request, better argued on the job you are targeting or submitted earlier in the year, sometimes ends differently. If the quote arrived too late, aim at a later session and have it filed 2 to 3 weeks before the start. You can ask for a review and, as a last step, refer the matter to France Travail's médiateur. One honest caveat: when the refusal is about the provider rather than about you, no appeal will change it, because your file was never the problem.
Can an online course or a foreign provider be funded by AIF?
An online course, yes, but with an added condition: the conditions générales de financement restrict distance learning to certifying courses registered in the RNCP or the Répertoire spécifique and delivered by a Qualiopi-certified organisation. In-person training does not carry that extra test. A foreign provider hits a simpler obstacle: without a French numéro de déclaration d'activité there is no Kairos access, so no quote and no payment. And no, a certification obtained in another EU country does not stand in for Qualiopi. Code Labs Academy is a German company certified under AZAV, which opens public training funding in Germany and has no legal effect in France. There is no automatic recognition of training accreditation from one member state to another, which surprises people and is worth knowing before you spend weeks on it.
Can I keep my unemployment benefit while studying with you?
That is the right question to ask, and the answer belongs to your adviser. A jobseeker receiving ARE whose training is validated in their PPAE keeps the benefit during the course, as ARE formation: that mechanism looks at your situation and the coherence of your plan rather than at any approval of the provider. The practical point to settle before you commit is the attendance declaration, which normally goes through Kairos, which we cannot access; the paper attestation d'inscription route depends on how your agency handles it. So take your plan to your adviser before you book a seat, ask explicitly how they want attendance evidenced, and do not commit your budget on an assumed answer. We are happy to supply the syllabus, the total hours, the dates and an enrolment confirmation for that appointment.
What about my CPF? Is that not the same thing as AIF?
No, they work in opposite directions, even though both hit the same French registration requirement when they reach us. The CPF is a personal account: the rights are yours, they follow you through your career, you book online and nobody has to approve your plan. AIF is not an accrued right at all: it is a discretionary grant with no balance and no guaranteed amount, given or refused by an adviser according to your project and the agency budget. In practice a jobseeker can have both in mind, spending a CPF balance on a listed course and asking for an AIF to cover what the balance does not. Both run through providers registered in France, which we are not. The detail, including the co-payment in force since April 2026, is in our guide to the CPF and bootcamps.
