If you can get a place, take it
Skills Bootcamps are free, flexible courses of up to 16 weeks at levels 3 to 5, and the catalogue leans heavily digital: coding, data analytics and engineering, Cybersecurity, UX. They are free to the individual learner, a typical course is worth somewhere in the region of GBP 2,000 to 5,000 in delivery, and everyone who completes one is guaranteed a job interview. If you claim Universal Credit you can attend full time for up to 16 weeks without losing your benefits, which removes the single biggest practical obstacle most career changers run into. So the advice on this page is simple and we are not going to dress it up. If you are 19 or over, live in England, have the right to work in the UK, and there is a bootcamp running in your subject and your region, apply for it. It is a good scheme, it is aimed at precisely the subjects we teach, and it costs you nothing. Code Labs Academy cannot deliver one. Funded places can only be delivered by organisations that have won a Skills Bootcamps contract through Department for Education or mayoral strategic authority procurement, and those providers work under DfE funding and performance rules. Our German AZAV certification has no standing in that system and we are not going to imply otherwise. That is a procurement rule, and it means a Code Labs Academy course cannot be a funded Skills Bootcamp. What follows is therefore not a pitch: it is how the scheme works, who it leaves out, and what is realistically available to the people it leaves out.
Three conditions do most of the work: you are 19 or over, you live in England, and you have the right to work in the UK. If any of those three is missing, this particular scheme is not the route for you, and the section further down is the more useful one.
Being in work does not disqualify you. Employed, unemployed and self-employed people are all eligible. The scheme is designed for people changing career and for people upskilling inside a job they already have.
On Universal Credit, you can study full time for up to 16 weeks on a Skills Bootcamp without losing your benefits. Agree it with your work coach before you enrol so it is written into your claimant commitment rather than argued about afterwards.
Beyond those basics, eligibility varies by bootcamp and by region. Each provider sets its own entry requirements for its own courses, and what is on offer depends on which contracts have been awarded where you live. Administration is moving from the DfE to the DWP and to devolved mayoral strategic authorities across FY 2026 to 2027, so regional variation is increasing, not decreasing.
Employers can send staff, at a price. An employer putting an existing employee through a Skills Bootcamp pays a co-contribution of 10 to 30% of the course cost. For an individual learner applying on their own account, there is no fee.

Can I use a Skills Bootcamp to pay for a Code Labs Academy course?

For an individual learner, it is genuinely free. You pay nothing for the training, and there is no loan attached. Two things are worth understanding rather than treating as a catch. First, no cash reaches you: the funding pays the provider, so the roughly GBP 2,000 to 5,000 a course is worth is not money you can spend elsewhere, and the scheme covers no living costs. Second, if your employer is putting you through it as an existing employee, the employer pays a co-contribution of 10 to 30%. The cost to you is your time, which for a course of up to 16 weeks is a real commitment worth planning properly.
Does the guaranteed interview mean I get a job?
No, and this is the single most misread feature of the scheme. Completing a Skills Bootcamp guarantees you an interview with an employer, not an offer. That is still a meaningful advantage, because getting in front of a hiring manager is the step most self-taught career changers never reach. But plan around it: build the portfolio, prepare for the technical stages, and keep applying elsewhere in parallel rather than treating the guaranteed interview as the finish line.
What if I am refused a place, or nothing is running near me?
Both happen, and neither is unusual. Places are limited per wave and per region, providers set their own entry requirements, and availability is shifting as administration moves to the DWP and to mayoral strategic authorities across FY 2026 to 2027. Ask the provider directly why the application did not succeed and when the next intake opens, apply to more than one provider, and check the official catalogue again in a few weeks rather than assuming the answer is permanent. I live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Can I do a Skills Bootcamp?
Not this one. Skills Bootcamps in the form described here are an England programme, with residency in England as a condition. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each run their own adult skills and retraining schemes with their own rules, budgets and eligibility, and because we have not researched those here we are not going to tell you whether they will or will not work for you. Check your national provision first, and if it does not fit, employer funding and our own instalment options are open to you wherever you are in the UK.
Does an online or foreign provider count for any UK training funding?
It depends entirely on whose money it is. For public funding in England, almost always no: Skills Bootcamps require a contract, and the wider public system runs on registers and approved qualification lists that a German online provider does not sit on. For private money, the picture reverses completely. A UK employer can buy training from any supplier anywhere, with no accreditation gate, and work-related training paid for by an employer is tax-free for the employee and deductible for the company, which makes employer-sponsored training the most realistic route to funding a course with us. If you are self-employed, training costs for your existing trade may also be deductible, and your accountant can confirm that for your situation.
