Paying for your course in Singapore with a personal loan
A general unsecured personal loan is the one route in Singapore that can pay for a course with us: the cash is credited to you, so the lender never assesses the school you choose. It is borrowing, so compare the EIR rather than the advertised flat rate, and read the interest-free alternative below before you apply anywhere. Bank education loans and SkillsFuture both run on approved-institution lists, which is a different question and one this page answers too.
What actually works in Singapore, and the two products that do not
Singapore's training funding runs almost entirely through SkillsFuture Singapore approval, and SkillsFuture Credit can only be spent on SSG-approved courses from providers registered here. Code Labs Academy is a German provider teaching online and is not SSG-registered, so SkillsFuture cannot pay for our courses. That is not a complaint about the scheme, which is a good one: it simply is not aimed at foreign online training. The second dead end catches more people, because it looks like the obvious answer. Bank education loans, meaning DBS and POSB Further Study Assist and OCBC's Education Loan, are gated on closed lists of approved institutions, and Further Study Assist is disbursed by telegraphic transfer or MEPS straight into the institution's own account, with applicants expressly barred from having the money credited to their own DBS or POSB account. So there is no workaround: even if the affordability side went perfectly, the money physically cannot reach a school that is not on the list. What does work is the ordinary product sitting next to it on the same bank's website: a general unsecured personal loan. The cash is credited to you, the use is unrestricted, and no lender checks course accreditation, provider nationality or delivery mode. DBS Personal Loan and Cashline, OCBC ExtraCash, UOB, Standard Chartered CashOne and Maybank CreditAble were all live and widely marketed in mid-2026, alongside licensed moneylenders. We name them as a category, not as recommendations, and we have no relationship with any of them. Now the part a page selling you a loan would leave out. This is debt, not a grant and not government money, and it costs real interest. It is also not cheaper than paying us directly: Code Labs Academy offers interest-free monthly instalments, up to 60 payments made straight to us, which add nothing to the fee. A personal loan earns its place when you want the cash in hand for other costs, or a longer term than we offer. If your only reason for borrowing is to spread the cost of tuition, take the instalments and skip the interest.
Working adults who pass the lender's income and credit tests. Each bank sets its own minimum annual income and assesses your file at the Credit Bureau. Citizens, permanent residents and pass holders are all lent to, on different terms, and some products ask foreigners for a guarantor. Approval belongs to the lender alone and is never automatic.
MAS caps your total unsecured debt across all lenders at 12 times your monthly income. That rule has been in force since 1 June 2019 and is unchanged in 2026. It is a total, not a per-bank limit: credit card balances, overdrafts, credit lines and any existing personal loan all count towards it. Someone earning S$3,000 a month therefore tops out near S$36,000 of unsecured credit in total.
Do that arithmetic against our fee before you get attached to the idea. Our bootcamps cost EUR 5,000 to EUR 17,000, roughly S$7,000 to S$25,000 depending on the exchange rate. On a S$3,000 monthly income that fits inside the cap, but it eats most of the headroom and leaves very little room for a card balance or an emergency. Treat that as a reason to borrow carefully, not as a green light.
A separate rule bites earlier than the cap does. Under the Credit Limit Management Measure, once your total unsecured debt passes 6 times your monthly income, lenders are restricted from granting you new unsecured facilities. That is a different rule from the 12 times borrowing limit, and the claim circulating that the cap itself drops to 6 times in 2026 is a misreading of it.
If you earn under S$20,000 a year, your total unsecured credit is capped at S$3,000. In practice that puts this route out of reach for a course fee, whatever your credit history looks like. Go straight to the last section on this page instead of applying and collecting a rejection on your file.
The one bank product that will not work is the one called an education loan. DBS and POSB Further Study Assist runs on a closed List of Approved Institutions: Singapore private education institutions, the six local universities, the five polytechnics and thirteen Australian universities, with case-by-case exceptions only for institutions ranked in the world's top 1,000 universities or registered locally with the Committee for Private Education. We are neither, and OCBC's Education Loan is gated the same way, with its own applicable-institution lists plus an acceptance letter from the school.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a DBS or OCBC education loan to pay for a Code Labs Academy course?
No, and this is the single most likely place to waste an application. DBS and POSB Further Study Assist lends only against a closed List of Approved Institutions: Singapore private education institutions, the six local universities, the five polytechnics and thirteen Australian universities, with case-by-case exceptions only for institutions ranked in the world's top 1,000 universities or registered locally with the Committee for Private Education. We are a German private training provider, so we are neither. The second blocker is independent of the first and just as final: the loan is disbursed by telegraphic transfer or MEPS directly into the approved institution's account, and applicants are expressly barred from having it credited to their own DBS or POSB account, so the money cannot be routed to a school that is not on the list. OCBC's Education Loan works the same way, with its own applicable-institution lists and a requirement for an acceptance letter from the school. The product that does work is the plain personal loan sitting next to it on the same bank's site.
Does SkillsFuture Credit cover an overseas online bootcamp?
No. SkillsFuture Credit can only be used on courses approved by SkillsFuture Singapore, which requires the provider to be registered here and the course to be listed. That register is a Singapore domestic one, so SkillsFuture Credit is spendable only on courses listed on it, and no adviser or workaround changes that. It is a well-designed scheme that is simply aimed at training delivered in Singapore by providers registered in Singapore. If you have credit sitting unused, it keeps its value for a course that is on the list, and it is worth using there rather than trying to force it in this direction.
How much can I actually borrow, and what if I am refused?
The ceiling is set by regulation before any bank looks at you. MAS caps your total unsecured debt across all lenders at 12 times your monthly income, in force since June 2019 and unchanged in 2026, so someone earning S$3,000 a month can hold at most around S$36,000 of unsecured credit in total, counting cards and overdrafts. Separately, once your unsecured debt passes 6 times your monthly income, the Credit Limit Management Measure restricts new facilities, which is a different rule and often the one you meet first. And if you earn under S$20,000 a year, your total unsecured credit is capped at S$3,000, which effectively closes this route. If you are refused, ask the lender which factor decided it, because a thin credit file, existing commitments and an income shortfall each point to different next steps: a smaller amount, a longer term, or a different lender, since banks assess independently of one another. A refusal does not close off the course, though. Our interest-free instalment plan involves no lender and no credit check.
Is a personal loan cheaper than your instalment plan?
No. We would rather say so plainly than have you work it out after signing. Code Labs Academy's monthly plan is interest-free, up to 60 payments made directly to us, so the total you pay is the course fee and nothing more. Any loan, at any rate, costs you the fee plus interest, and in Singapore the advertised flat rate hides roughly half of that cost until you look at the EIR. The honest case for a loan is different from cost: it puts cash in your hand, which a tuition plan does not, and it can run on a longer term than we offer. If you need to cover living costs while you study, or you want the fee settled in one payment to take the upfront discount, a loan can be the right tool. If you only want to spread the tuition, take the interest-free plan.
What happens if I lose my job halfway through the course?
The loan stands. It is an ordinary personal loan, not an agreement tied to your future earnings, and the repayment schedule is unaffected by how the course or the job market goes. If your income changes, contact the lender early rather than missing a payment: banks can sometimes restructure a term or agree a temporary arrangement when they hear from you in advance, while missed payments are reported to the Credit Bureau and affect your borrowing for years. The practical rule is to borrow an amount you could still service through a bad six months, not the amount that works in a good one. On our side, tell us early too. A conversation with the school you are studying at is a very different situation from arrears on a regulated loan, which is the strongest argument for using the interest-free instalments where they cover what you need and borrowing only for the gap they do not.
Does it matter that the school is in Germany and teaches online?
Not to a personal loan, no. The lender is lending to you, assessing your income and your credit file, and the money is credited to your own account. The school never appears on the application, so course accreditation, provider nationality and delivery mode are all irrelevant to the decision. Code Labs Academy is certified under AZAV, the German state quality standard for training providers. It carries no legal weight in Singapore and no lender here will ask about it, though it is a reasonable thing to point to if someone wants to know who you would be paying. Where the school does matter is on the products this page tells you to avoid: bank education loans and the government student loan schemes both check the institution, which is exactly why they cannot be used for us.
