Retrain in Ireland without losing your payment
Ireland has two supports for a jobseeker who wants to retrain, and together they answer the whole question. The Part-Time Education Option lets you keep your full weekly payment and your secondary benefits while you study, with distance education written into the rules and nothing at all said about who runs the course. The Training Support Grant can put up to EUR 1,000 towards the fee. Both rest on the same condition, and it is the one that decides everything: you have to stay available for and genuinely seeking full-time work, which makes part-time a requirement rather than a preference.
Two supports, one condition, and the condition picks your format
Most funding pages ask you to choose between schemes. This one asks you to choose a timetable, because in Ireland the format of the course is what decides whether the supports apply at all. The Part-Time Education Option is not money: it is permission. It confirms that studying part-time will not cost you your Jobseeker's Allowance or Benefit, and it extends to distance education explicitly, which is unusual and is why a course delivered online from outside Ireland sits inside it. What it does not do is relax the rule the payment rests on. You must remain available for work and genuinely seeking it, so a full-time schedule that would make you unavailable is the thing that puts the payment at risk, not the school and not the subject. The Training Support Grant is the money half, and it is small and discretionary by design: up to EUR 1,000 in a twelve month period, decided by your own Intreo adviser against your Personal Progression Plan, and aimed at a training need a state provider cannot meet quickly. Against a bootcamp fee that is a contribution rather than an answer, and this page says so rather than dressing it up. What the two do together is real: state-supported living costs while you retrain part-time, plus a grant towards the fee, plus a payment plan for the rest.
PTEO is open on Jobseeker's Allowance, Jobseeker's Benefit, Jobseeker's Benefit (Self-Employed) and Jobseeker's Pay-Related Benefit. It keeps your full personal rate, around EUR 244 a week, along with your secondary benefits, while you attend a part-time day or evening course.
Distance education is named in the rules rather than tolerated by silence. That is the sentence that matters for a course like ours: the scheme regulates your welfare status, not the course, so there is no approved-college list, no accreditation test and no rule about where the provider sits.
The condition is availability, and it is not a formality. You must remain available for and genuinely seeking full-time work throughout. A part-time or evening schedule sits comfortably with that; a full-time bootcamp timetable generally does not, and that is the honest reason this page keeps returning to format.
The Training Support Grant is separate money, up to EUR 1,000 in any twelve months. It is discretionary, decided by your Employment Personal Adviser at Intreo, and it has to link to your Personal Progression Plan and a realistic job goal. All courses in the year share that single cap.
TSG has no national provider register, and private online providers have been funded. The published conditions ask that the course be up to and including QQI Level 6 or carry industry-recognised certification. Approval is your adviser's call on your case rather than a list you either appear on or do not.
Neither pays a bootcamp fee, and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise. PTEO is no new money at all, and EUR 1,000 against fees of EUR 5,000 to 17,000 is a contribution. What they buy you is the ability to retrain at all without losing your income, which for most people is the actual obstacle.

Can I do a full-time bootcamp and keep my payment?
Realistically no, and this is the question worth answering honestly rather than hedging. The payment rests on your being available for and genuinely seeking full-time work, and a full-time course timetable is difficult to reconcile with that. The Part-Time Education Option is named for exactly this reason. If a full-time programme is what you want, the relevant question becomes whether a different support fits your circumstances, and it is a conversation to have with your Intreo adviser before you enrol rather than a risk to take quietly.
Does it matter that Code Labs Academy is not an Irish provider?
Not for PTEO, which regulates your welfare status rather than the course, and which names distance education in its own rules. For the Training Support Grant there is no national provider register either: the published conditions look at the level of the course, up to and including QQI Level 6, or at industry-recognised certification, and private online providers have been funded. What decides a TSG application is your adviser's assessment of your case, so the useful preparation is a clear job goal and a clear course outline rather than a claim about accreditation.
How much is the Training Support Grant really worth to me?
Up to EUR 1,000 across all courses in a twelve month period, and it is discretionary rather than an entitlement. Against a live bootcamp at EUR 5,000 to 17,000 that is a contribution rather than a solution, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling. Where it goes furthest is on a shorter course, where EUR 1,000 covers a much larger share of the price. That is worth weighing when you choose the format, and it is one of several reasons this page keeps pointing at the shorter self-paced options.
Do I apply for PTEO and the grant at the same time?
They go through the same adviser but they are two decisions, and it is worth taking them in order. Settle the PTEO position first, because that is what protects your weekly income, and get it confirmed before you commit money to anything. Then make the case for the grant against your Personal Progression Plan. Doing it the other way round means you may have a small grant and an unresolved question about your payment, which is the wrong trade.
I am not on a jobseeker's payment. Is any of this for me?
Not these two, which are both attached to jobseeker status. Ireland's strongest route for anyone employed is the employer one, because Revenue treats employer-paid fees for role-relevant training as exempt from benefit-in-kind with no approved-college requirement. What if my adviser says no?
That is a decision about your case rather than a statement about the course, and it is worth asking what would change it. Advisers weigh whether the training is likely to lead to work, whether it fits the plan you have agreed, and whether a state provider could meet the need sooner. If the answer is that a SOLAS or ETB course covers it, look at that seriously, because those are free. If the gap is genuine, a sharper job goal and a clearer course outline often make the difference on a second conversation, and the PTEO side of this page does not depend on the grant being approved.
