Resign to retrain in France, and keep an income
Under the démission-reconversion scheme you can leave a permanent French job and still draw ARE unemployment benefit while you retrain, for up to around two years. The regional Transitions Pro commission validates your career-change project, not the school you pick, so a Code Labs Academy bootcamp can sit inside an approved plan, and the Qualiopi question that governs CPF funding simply does not arise here. Two things to know before anything else: ARE replaces your salary, it does not pay tuition, and the validation has to be in your hands before you hand in your resignation.
How the démission-reconversion scheme works
Since 2019, an employee who resigns in order to retrain can keep receiving ARE, France's unemployment benefit: on one condition, and it is a condition of sequence. Your project must first be worked through with a conseil en évolution professionnelle (CEP) adviser, then validated by the Association Transitions Pro for your region, before you write your resignation letter. That single sentence is the whole scheme, and it is also exactly where people lose it: resign first, build the file afterwards, and the door is shut for good. You also need 1,300 days worked in the sixty months before you resign, roughly five years of continuous employment. What makes this route genuinely useful in our case deserves to be stated precisely: the commission assesses your project (the job you are moving into, its employment prospects, and whether the training you chose gets you there) and not the accreditation of the training provider. Do not confuse it with the projet de transition professionnelle (PTP), which the same Association Transitions Pro also handles: that one pays tuition and does require Qualiopi certification and a registered qualification. Plenty of third-party articles copy that requirement onto the démission-reconversion page, where it does not belong. So a Code Labs Academy bootcamp can form part of a validated project even though we are a German company, not Qualiopi-certified and not registered in France. Can, not will: the commission keeps full discretion, a certifying course is easier to defend, and nobody can promise you a favourable opinion, although web development, data and Cybersecurity work in your favour, because the shortage of candidates in those roles is well documented. Then comes the limit to absorb before all the rest: this scheme replaces your income, it does not pay for your course. ARE lands every month while you study and hunt for your first role in the field; tuition stays with you: savings, interest-free instalments paid directly to the school, or an employer. It is a two-part financial plan, and this page covers both parts.
You are a private-sector employee thinking of resigning from a CDI (permanent contract). The scheme exists for people who voluntarily leave a stable job. If your contract ends on its own (a fixed-term contract running out, a redundancy) or by mutual termination (rupture conventionnelle), your ARE entitlement is assessed under the ordinary rules and this procedure does not apply to you.
You need 1,300 days worked in the 60 months before you resign, which is about five years of continuous employment. Those days can span several employers, but continuity is what counts, and checking it against your employment certificates is exactly what the CEP adviser does before you commit to anything.
Guidance from a conseil en évolution professionnelle (CEP) adviser is mandatory, and it must come before the resignation. It is free, independent of your employer, and it is with that adviser that you build the file the commission will later assess.
Your project has to be a real change of occupation, not the same job somewhere else. A documented move into web development, data science and AI, Cybersecurity or UX/UI design fits squarely: these are identifiable roles with real vacancies you can put in front of the commission.
The commission judges the project, not the school, but it does judge it. Nothing requires the provider to hold Qualiopi, to be registered in France or to appear on the RNCP. The decision is nonetheless discretionary: a file that is vague about the target job, or about how the course leads to it, can be refused whatever the provider.
Your rights have to have been built up in France. The scheme sits on top of French unemployment insurance, so it is your French-affiliated employment that counts. Worth knowing if you are an expat here: the whole procedure (CEP interview, file, decision) is conducted in French, and the file is assessed in French.
Frequently asked questions
Does this scheme pay for my Code Labs Academy bootcamp?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. Démission-reconversion opens up income replacement (ARE) while you retrain; it funds no course fees at all, for any provider, including French Qualiopi-certified ones. The mechanisms that pay tuition in the French system are the CPF, France Travail's AIF, an OPCO or the projet de transition professionnelle (PTP), and every one of them requires the provider to hold Qualiopi certification and to be registered in France. We are not, so none of them can pay our invoice. The reasoning therefore comes in two parts: this scheme secures your everyday life through the months of study and job-hunting, and you fund the tuition from savings, through interest-free instalments paid directly to the school, or through an employer, then recover a slice of the price later through the frais réels deduction.
How much will I receive, and for how long?
ARE is generally in the region of 57% of your former gross reference salary, which for people retraining into tech usually lands between EUR 1,200 and EUR 2,200 net per month. The exact calculation depends on your recent earnings and is only ever done by France Travail, so treat third-party simulators with suspicion and take your figure from your own notification. On duration, the maximum depends on your age and employment history: around two years for most claimants, longer for older ones. Because these parameters have been changed more than once in recent unemployment-insurance negotiations, treat any duration you read elsewhere as indicative until France Travail has notified you of yours. Finally, plan for the gap at the start: between your last payslip, your notice period and the first payment, several weeks go by.
What if Transitions Pro refuses my project?
You are still employed, which is precisely why the order of the steps matters: a refusal received before you resign costs you time and nothing else. You can ask for your file to be re-examined, and the appeal route, the recipient and the deadline are stated on the decision you receive; you can also rework the file with your CEP adviser and submit it again. The usual reasons for refusal have nothing to do with the school: a vague target job, no evidence of demand for it, a course whose link to the role is not spelled out, a missing financing plan. Those are fixable, and we can give you the material to fix them: detailed syllabus, teaching hours, graduate outcomes, a formal quote. If the refusal stands, do not resign hoping France Travail will see it differently: without the attestation, a resignation does not open ARE. The sensible fallback is the part-time bootcamp while you keep your job.
I have already resigned. Can I still use the scheme?
No. Validation has to happen before the contract ends, and there is no retrospective fix: once the letter is sent, this route is closed, however good your career-change plan is. That is why this page hammers the sequence so hard. Separately from this scheme, a small number of situations exist in which a resignation is treated as legitimate for unemployment-insurance purposes. They have nothing to do with retraining, and France Travail is the only body that can tell you whether yours is one of them, so ask them directly rather than trusting a forum. If none applies, there are still options that do not need benefits at all: the part-time format, interest-free instalments paid directly to the school, and the frais réels deduction.
Can a German online school without Qualiopi really be part of an approved project?
Yes, it can, and that is what makes this route worth knowing about. The commission assesses whether your career-change project is real and serious: whether the target occupation makes sense, what its employment prospects are, and whether the training you chose is coherent with that goal. No condition applies to the provider's accreditation, its registration in France or the listing of the course on the RNCP. That requirement belongs to the projet de transition professionnelle (PTP), a different scheme handled by the same Association Transitions Pro, and a great many explainer articles conflate the two. Our AZAV certification is German and equally beside the point here. The honest flip side: the assessment is discretionary, and a course leading to a formal French qualification is easier to defend than one that does not. What compensates is the quality of your file: a named job, job adverts to back it, a detailed syllabus with hours, and a clear timetable and budget.
What does France Travail check after six months?
That you are genuinely doing what you said you would. Roughly six months after you register, France Travail checks that the validated project is being implemented: you need to be able to show that the training started and is under way. So keep your enrolment agreement, invoices and proof of payment, attendance or progress records and submitted work as you go. Our teaching team provides these documents on request. If the check concludes that the project is not being followed, the sanction is removal from the jobseeker register for four months, with your benefit interrupted. In practice this goes smoothly for anyone doing a full-time bootcamp, with one caveat: if your project changes along the way (a different specialisation, a different timetable, dropping out), tell your adviser rather than waiting for the check to find it.
