Which route applies to you, in the order worth trying
This is a triage page rather than a programme page. Germany has more funded routes into a tech career than fit on one screen, and what is missing is rarely another list: it is the order. The first section below ranks them by how reliably the money actually arrives, from the voucher that can pay the entire fee down to the state top-ups that are worth an afternoon of paperwork and no more. Start at the top and stop at the first item that fits your situation. One fork decides most of it: whether you are registered as a jobseeker, in a job with an employer who might pay or apply, or paying for the course out of your own pocket. Underneath all of them sits the tax deduction, which asks nobody's permission and applies to almost everyone who pays their own fee. The public routes are individual decisions taken by an advisor, a state bank or a funding body, so none of them is automatic, and every one of them has to be settled before the course starts. Each item links to the page that carries the conditions, the amounts and the application steps, and this page deliberately does not repeat them.
1. The Bildungsgutschein, if you are registered as unemployed or as a jobseeker, or your job is at risk. It can cover 100% of the course fee with no co-payment from you, because Code Labs Academy holds AZAV Träger- und Maßnahmenzulassung: that certification is what allows public money to pay for our courses at all, here and under the Qualifizierungschancengesetz below, and it means we redeem the voucher and invoice the Agentur für Arbeit rather than you. Two things to carry into the appointment: since 1 July 2026 the vouchers are issued by the Agentur für Arbeit rather than the Jobcenter, and for people receiving Grundsicherung placement into available work now takes priority over training, which makes approval harder for that group. The decision is your advisor's, case by case. Bildungsgutschein
2. The Qualifizierungschancengesetz, if you are employed and your employer will file for it. The Bundesagentur für Arbeit reimburses 25% to 100% of the course cost depending on the size of the company, and can add a subsidy towards the wages for the hours you spend training. The application goes from your employer to the Arbeitgeber-Service roughly six weeks before the start date, so this is a conversation with whoever holds the budget rather than a form for you. Qualifizierungschancengesetz
3. Your employer simply paying, which is the shortest route on this list. No application, no authority and no accreditation condition: the company buys the training and we invoice the company. Under § 3 Nr. 19 EStG it is income-tax-free for you and an ordinary deductible business expense for them. Employer-paid training in Germany
4. The tax deduction, the universal fallback for everyone who pays their own fee. Job-related further training is deductible as Werbungskosten with no upper limit, there is no application, no deadline before you enrol and no provider accreditation to check, and roughly 14% to 45% of what you spend comes back at your marginal rate. With no taxable income this year you file anyway and carry the cost forward as a Verlustvortrag. Deduct your bootcamp as Werbungskosten
5. Your Bundesland's voucher, which is a top-up rather than a funding plan. Each one pays a share and leaves the rest with you, and which is open to you depends on where you live or work: Bildungsscheck NRW (50%, up to EUR 500 a year, with an income limit), QualiScheck Rhineland-Palatinate (60%, up to EUR 1,500, no income limit), Bildungsscheck Brandenburg (60%, with the old ceiling removed) and the Weiterbildungsbonus Schleswig-Holstein (60%, up to EUR 5,000, through an employer based in the state that co-funds the rest). All four decide case by case and want the application in before the course begins.
6. The Berufsförderungsdienst, if you are leaving the Bundeswehr. A specific niche with real money behind it: Soldaten auf Zeit build up an education entitlement of roughly EUR 5,000 to EUR 21,000 and more depending on years served, and BFD settles approved course costs directly with the provider. Every measure is approved individually against your Förderungsplan by your Berufsförderungsberater. BFD Bundeswehr
Frequently asked questions
I am unemployed. Where do I start?
With the Agentur für Arbeit, before you enrol anywhere. If you are registered as unemployed or as a jobseeker, a Bildungsgutschein can cover 100% of the course fee, and because Code Labs Academy holds AZAV Träger- und Maßnahmenzulassung we redeem the voucher and invoice the agency rather than you. Ask for a counselling appointment through the agency's own page on the voucher, arbeitsagentur.de: Bildungsgutschein, take the course description, the price and the duration with you, and plan roughly two to three months before the intake you want: the voucher has to exist before the course starts, and nothing can be funded retroactively. It is a discretionary decision, so nobody can promise you one. If it does not come through, the money is still not simply gone: with no taxable income in that year you file a return anyway and have the loss carried forward, which reduces your tax in the first year you earn again. The full route is on the Bildungsgutschein page.
My employer is willing to pay. What is cheapest for them?
Start with the simple version: the company pays our invoice. Under § 3 Nr. 19 EStG that is income-tax-free for you and a deductible business expense for them, and there is no application, no authority and no accreditation condition anywhere in it. Then treat public money as the upside rather than the plan. Under the Qualifizierungschancengesetz the Bundesagentur reimburses 25% to 100% of the course costs depending on company size, with a subsidy towards the wages for training hours on top. That one is filed by the employer with the Arbeitgeber-Service roughly six weeks before the start, the measure has to run more than 120 hours and come from an AZAV-certified provider, and there is no approval after the course has begun. Build the proposal on the tax treatment, which applies today, and let the reimbursement improve it. The pitch, the numbers and a template email are on employer-paid training.
I am paying for it myself. What do I actually get back?
Your marginal tax rate applied to the whole cost, because job-related further training is deductible as Werbungskosten without an upper limit. Across German taxpayers that is roughly 14% to 45%, and the refund arrives with your tax assessment months after you pay, so treat it as a lower final price rather than as a way to pay the invoice this month. With no taxable income in the year you pay, file the return anyway and ask for the remaining loss carry-forward to be assessed. On top of that, check whether your Bundesland runs a voucher, since NRW, Rhineland-Palatinate, Brandenburg and Schleswig-Holstein all do on different terms. Whatever is left can be spread over interest-free monthly instalments, up to 60 payments, paid directly to Code Labs Academy. The details are on Werbungskosten.
Can I combine two of these?
Often, yes, and one rule governs all of it: you can only deduct what you actually bore yourself. If the Agentur für Arbeit settles the fee through a Bildungsgutschein, you have no cost and there is nothing left to claim. If a regional voucher reimburses part of the fee, your deductible amount drops by exactly that sum and the rest stays fully deductible. If your employer pays, that share is tax-free for you and deductible for the company, while a share you top up yourself is yours to claim. Employer payment and the Qualifizierungschancengesetz are designed to work together, since the company pays and reclaims part of it. What does not work is collecting the same regional voucher twice in one year: the Bildungsscheck NRW, for instance, is one per person per calendar year.
Does it matter that I live in one Bundesland and work in another?
For the regional vouchers it matters a great deal, and each one draws the line differently. The Bildungsscheck NRW goes by your residence in North Rhine-Westphalia. The QualiScheck counts either a main residence or a workplace in Rhineland-Palatinate, so commuters in both directions are in scope. Brandenburg's 2026 directive opened the Bildungsscheck to people who work in Brandenburg but live elsewhere, which is the change that matters if you commute out of Berlin. The Weiterbildungsbonus Schleswig-Holstein goes by neither of those: what counts is that your employer has its headquarters or a branch in the state and co-funds at least 40% of the eligible costs. The Bildungsgutschein, the Qualifizierungschancengesetz and the tax deduction are federal, so they apply wherever in Germany you live.
Do I need to be a German citizen for any of this?
No. Nationality is not an eligibility criterion on these routes. For the Bildungsgutschein what matters is that you live in Germany, are registered with the Agentur für Arbeit and are free to take up work here. The Bildungsscheck NRW and the Brandenburg scheme have no citizenship condition either, and the tax deduction follows your tax return rather than your passport. Plan for the language side rather than the legal one: the counselling appointment at the Agentur für Arbeit is usually held in German, and the state portals and their correspondence are in German too, so bring someone who can interpret or budget time for translation. Our own teaching is entirely in English, and we supply the course documents you need to hand over.
