Funding a bootcamp in Australia

Australia funds training generously, and almost all of it runs through your job rather than around it. The three routes that reach a course you choose yourself are all tax routes, and which one applies turns on a single question: how closely the course connects to the work you are doing now.

Why Australia sorts into work routes and register routes

Australia has two kinds of training money and they behave completely differently. The subsidised system, Fee-Free TAFE and VET Student Loans and the state schemes, moves money when a course sits on an approved qualification list delivered by a registered training organisation, and those lists are set by each state and territory. The tax system works the other way round: it does not care who delivers the course, it cares whether the training belongs to the work you already do. That second test is the one a bootcamp can meet, which is why every route below is a tax route.

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim the course fees on my tax return?

If the course maintains or improves the skills you use in your current job, or is likely to increase the income you earn from it, then yes, at question D4. The full amount qualifies since the $250 threshold was removed in July 2022, and the cash value is the fees multiplied by your marginal rate. Keep the receipts: above $300 of total work-related claims the ATO expects written evidence.

I am switching careers into tech. Does the deduction still work?

Usually not, and this is the part worth being straight about. Ruling TR 2024/3 draws the line at study undertaken to get a new job or open a new income-earning activity, which is what a career change is. If a redundancy is involved, the retraining exemption covers exactly that case. Otherwise the realistic answer is our instalment plan, and asking an employer in your target field whether they would fund the training as part of hiring you.

Can my employer pay for it, and is that taxed?

They can, and under the otherwise-deductible rule there is no fringe benefits tax where you could have claimed the deduction yourself, so the same connection to your current role is what decides it. Your employer also deducts the cost as a business expense. If you are packaging it from pre-tax salary, get the arrangement in place before the fees are incurred.

I am being made redundant. Does that change what is available?

Yes, and it is the one case where the answer is better rather than worse. The fringe benefits tax retraining and reskilling exemption lets your employer fund training for a genuinely new direction with no FBT and no fixed cap, once their Fair Work redundancy obligations are met. It is the only Australian route here that does not ask the course to match the job you already have. Ask while the redundancy conversation is still open.

Can I use Fee-Free TAFE or a VET Student Loan for this?

Those schemes are built around approved qualifications delivered by registered training organisations, with the funded course lists set by each state and territory, so the question they ask is about the qualification rather than about you. That is worth checking first for any course you are considering, because it settles the matter before eligibility does.

I am not working at the moment. What is realistically open to me?

The tax routes run off income you already earn, so with no assessable income they have nothing to reduce. What is left is our interest-free instalment plan, any discount you qualify for, and the conversation with a future employer about funding training as part of taking you on. If you are between jobs because of a redundancy, read the retraining exemption above first.
