Tobiko Raises $21.8M to Build an Advanced Platform to Improve Data Management

With $21.8 million in investment, Tobiko is planning to create an advanced data platform. The founders want to revolutionize the way teams handle data. They have worked with well-known firms including Apple, Airbnb, Google, and Netflix. With its user-friendly, low-code interface, Tobiko's new product, a dbt-compatible data transformation platform, combines well-known projects like SQLMesh and SQLGlot to make it simpler for users to build data pipelines.

Tobiko, which unveiled its cloud platform on Tuesday, revealed that it had raised $21.8 million in total, consisting of a $4.5 million seed round and a $17.3 million Series A investment. Prominent individuals and companies such as Theory Ventures, 20Sales, and CEOs from Fivetran, Census, and MotherDuck are among the investors.

Toby, the co-founder of Tobiko and the leader of Airbnb's Minerva project, saw that the internal measurements in Minerva may change lives. This insight, coupled with the dbt tools he utilized at Airbnb, provided the inputs to found a company that was initially dedicated to data transformation.

Though he believes that Tobiko's tools may be used by any kind of business, including big tech businesses, Toby recognizes the importance of dbt in the construction of data stacks for Series A companies. Their platform includes SQLMesh, an open source tool that leverages SQL's semantic understanding through SQLGlot—another product Toby created when he was at Airbnb—to improve the development of data pipelines with collaboration and testing features.

By adding syntax checks and monitoring developer modifications, Tobiko improves SQL query management with the goal of providing an observability level that not only identifies errors but also elucidates their causes.

Tobiko also presents "virtual data environments" for developers, which are applicable to both development and repurposing in many projects, including production. The company is already working with a range of clients, including multiple unicorn startups, and is largely focused on data engineering teams. A large portion of the clientele are brand-new to the service, while some are former DBT customers who switched to Tobiko.
