How to pay for a bootcamp in Sweden

Sweden separates the money from the time, and it does it in two different laws that point in different directions. The statutory right to study leave covers a course with us and pays nothing. The benefit that pays 80% of your salary is scoped to Swedish education. So the route that works here runs through your employer, and one question about your workplace decides what it costs you in tax.

Keep the money and the time apart, and the Swedish picture becomes simple

Almost everyone arriving here has been reading about omställningsstudiestöd, and with good reason: 80% of your previous salary while you retrain is close to the most generous mid-career benefit in Europe. It is also scoped to Swedish education, so it is not the route to a course with us, and knowing that on day one saves months. What Sweden gives you instead is unusually clean once separated into its two halves. Studieledighetslagen is a statutory right to be away from your job to study, it draws no line at the border and vets no schools, and it carries no money. Employer-paid training is where the money is, it needs no register, no authority and no application, and the tax treatment turns on one question about your workplace rather than on anything about the school. Read the routes below in order, then the second section, because the single fact that changes the answer most is there.

Frequently asked questions

I am about to be made redundant. What should I ask for, and when?

Ask for employer-paid retraining, and ask while the reorganisation is still open. Where a staff-reduction measure has been taken, the tax exemption covers retraining even for a completely different occupation, which is the one situation in Sweden where an employer can fund a full career switch without a taxable benefit landing on you. That makes the timing the whole thing: once your exit is settled and the process closed, the conversation is much harder to reopen. Ask us for a written quote, the curriculum and the teaching hours first, so you are putting a specific number in front of them rather than an idea.

Can I use omställningsstudiestöd for a Code Labs Academy course?

No, and the reason is the scheme's scope rather than anything about the course: CSN states that studying abroad does not give entitlement, and the qualifying categories are Swedish education carrying the right to studiemedel plus training bought by the omställningsorganisationer. If you meet the conditions and a Swedish education fits what you want, it is an excellent benefit and you should use it. For a course with us, the combination that works is your employer paying the fee and, if you want to step out of work, taking the job protection separately.

Is study leave paid?

No. Studieledighetslagen protects your job and your terms while you are away, and it obliges nobody to pay your salary or your tuition. That separation is the thing to carry away from this page: in Sweden the time and the money come from different places, so plan them as two requests. The leave costs your employer no cash and is a statutory right rather than a favour, while the fee is a budget decision. People who ask for both, in that order, tend to do better than people who ask for one thing and call it a plan.

Does it matter that Code Labs Academy is a German provider teaching online?

Not for either of the two routes at the top of this page. Employer-paid training involves no Swedish register, no authority and no accreditation test, because your employer is buying training from a supplier rather than drawing on a subsidy. The study-leave statute does not vet schools and draws no line at the border or at distance learning; what it asks is that the studies be planmässiga. Where the question does decide the answer is the public benefits, which are scoped to Swedish education, and those are in the third section.

Do I need a collective agreement at work for any of this?

Not for study leave: the statute applies to employees generally, whether or not there is a kollektivavtal. Where an agreement matters is at the edges. Postponement of your leave beyond six months normally needs the local union's agreement, which cuts in your favour, and if you were pursuing omställningsstudiestöd it would determine which omställningsorganisation issues the mandatory yttrande. For the employer route it makes no difference to whether the company can pay, though your agreement or contract may already include an individual competence budget worth asking about first.

I want to study full time. How do people actually afford that in Sweden?

Usually by assembling it rather than finding one source. The job protection is free and statutory, so that part costs nothing to secure. The fee is the real question, and the order that works is your employer first, particularly if any staff reduction is under way, then a union study grant if yours offers one, then interest-free monthly instalments over up to 60 payments for whatever is left, or the upfront discount if you have saved for the change. It is also worth pricing the part-time route honestly before committing to full-time leave, because studying in the evenings alongside the job costs you no income at all.
