Weiterbildungsbonus Schleswig-Holstein: 60% of your bootcamp, through your employer

The Weiterbildungsbonus SH covers 60% of eligible course costs, up to EUR 5,000, if your employer is based in Schleswig-Holstein and co-funds the remaining 40%. It is not a voucher you can claim on your own. Check in thirty seconds whether it fits you, and take the employer proposal below if it does.

What the Weiterbildungsbonus SH actually is

The Weiterbildungsbonus Schleswig-Holstein is part of the Landesprogramm Arbeit, the state's ESF Plus programme, and it is administered by the Investitionsbank Schleswig-Holstein (IB.SH). Since 2 February 2026 the terms are considerably better than they were: the bonus covers 60% of eligible course costs up to EUR 5,000 per course, more than one course per person per year is possible, and the funding is secured until 31 December 2028. Digitalisation is one of the declared priority fields, which is exactly where our bootcamps sit. Now the part most write-ups get wrong, and the part that decides whether this page is worth your afternoon: the Weiterbildungsbonus is not an individual voucher. It is an employer-participation channel. The remaining 40% or more has to be carried by an employer with its headquarters or a branch in Schleswig-Holstein, the application runs through that employer route rather than through you alone, and the decision has to be in place before the course starts. Two further conditions settle most cases. A course delivered from outside the state, which is what a German online provider based elsewhere is, has to be justified with evidence that no comparable training is offered inside Schleswig-Holstein. And people who are self-employed or in an apprenticeship (Auszubildende) are excluded from the scheme outright. Where all of that lines up, the outcome is genuinely good: the funding reaches Code Labs Academy through your company and your own contribution can be zero. Where it does not, stop here and take one of the routes at the bottom of this page instead. Losing three weeks to the wrong application is the expensive mistake, not paying tuition.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for the Weiterbildungsbonus myself, without my employer?

No, and this is the single most common misunderstanding about the scheme. The Weiterbildungsbonus is built around employer participation: the employer has to carry at least 40% of the eligible costs and the application runs through that employer route, before the course starts. There is no path where an employee applies alone and receives the 60% as a personal grant. If your company will not take part, the realistic options are employer funding without the bonus (tax-free for you under § 3 Nr. 19 EStG), the tax deduction on your own return, interest-free monthly instalments of up to 60 payments paid directly to Code Labs Academy, or our upfront-payment discount.

I live in Schleswig-Holstein but my employer is in Hamburg. Does that count?

Not on your home address alone. The employer needs its headquarters or a branch in Schleswig-Holstein, and your workplace has to be in the state. A Hamburg company with an SH-resident employee is outside the scheme, however unfair that feels when you pay your rent in Kiel or Flensburg. The route that does work regardless of the federal state is the Qualifizierungschancengesetz, where the employer applies to the Bundesagentur für Arbeit and can get 25% to 100% of the course fee reimbursed depending on company size. Failing that, employer-paid training needs no authority at all.

Does a live online course from a provider outside Schleswig-Holstein qualify?

It can, but this is the condition that decides the application. Training delivered from outside the state has to be justified with evidence that no comparable offer exists inside Schleswig-Holstein, and for a broad topic like web development a reviewer will reasonably ask why the training cannot happen locally. Answer it with specifics rather than sweeping statements: live instructor-led teaching in English, the exact specialisation, and a part-time schedule that runs alongside a full-time job. Write down which SH providers you checked and which of those elements each one lacks. If an SH provider genuinely offers the same thing, the honest answer is that this scheme is meant to send you there.

What happens if the application is refused?

IB.SH decides each application individually, and approval is never automatic. Ask for the reason in writing, because the common ones have different fixes: a late application means reapplying for a later intake, an incomplete file means adding the missing course documentation, and a comparability objection means naming the specific features that are missing locally rather than restating the request. Nothing stops your employer from applying again in good time for a later cohort, and the programme runs until 31 December 2028. Meanwhile the course itself does not depend on the bonus: your employer can fund it directly, you can deduct the fee as Werbungskosten, and we offer interest-free monthly instalments of up to 60 payments paid directly to us plus a discount for paying upfront.

I am self-employed, or an Auszubildende. Is there anything here for me?

Not in this scheme. Self-employed people and trainees are explicitly excluded from the Weiterbildungsbonus, as are registered jobseekers, civil servants and public-sector staff. If you are self-employed the better route is fiscal rather than regional: professional training is a deductible business expense with no upper limit, which our page on deducting training costs explains. Combine that with interest-free monthly instalments of up to 60 payments directly to Code Labs Academy, or the upfront-payment discount, and the effective cost drops a long way below the sticker price.

Will I have to pay part of the fee myself?

The scheme does not require it. The bonus covers 60% of eligible costs up to EUR 5,000 and the employer covers the remainder, so an employee contribution of zero is a normal outcome when the company is fully on board. Two things can change that in practice. If the course fee is well above EUR 8,300 the cap holds the bonus at EUR 5,000, and the balance is a bigger number for the company to approve. And a company may simply offer a fixed contribution rather than the whole remainder. In that case you can cover your share in interest-free monthly instalments of up to 60 payments paid directly to Code Labs Academy, and claim what you pay yourself as Werbungskosten on your tax return.
