EUR 500 off your bootcamp, from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia
Live in NRW and earn under EUR 50,000 taxable? The relaunched Bildungsscheck 2.0 gives you 50% of your course fee back, capped at EUR 500 a year. It is a discount rather than funding, but it is one you apply for yourself, online, in about half an hour, and it stacks with the tax deduction on everything you pay yourself.
What the Bildungsscheck NRW 2.0 is, and what it is not
The Bildungsscheck is North Rhine-Westphalia's subsidy for job-related further training, run by the state labour ministry (MAGS) with European Social Fund money and processed by the Bezirksregierungen. It was relaunched as Bildungsscheck 2.0 with applications opening in February 2026, and the reform made it much easier to use: the old obligation to visit an approved counselling centre first is gone, you now apply directly online yourself, and online courses are explicitly eligible. The terms are simple: 50% of the course fee, a maximum of EUR 500 per person per calendar year, for people living in NRW whose taxable income is up to EUR 50,000 (EUR 100,000 if you are jointly assessed), taking training related to their current or intended occupation. Let us be straight about the size of it. Code Labs Academy bootcamps cost between EUR 5,000 and EUR 17,000, so EUR 500 is a discount of roughly 3 to 10 percent, not a way to fund a career change. What makes it worth doing is that it costs you one online application, nobody has to approve your career plan the way an Agentur für Arbeit advisor does, and it sits on top of everything else: the unlimited tax deduction on the rest of the fee, employer money, and our own instalment or upfront-payment terms. One rule matters more than all the others: the application has to be in before your course starts. Apply late and there is no way back.
You live in North Rhine-Westphalia. Residence in NRW is the first criterion: Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Essen, Bochum, Aachen, Münster and everywhere in between. Nationality is not a criterion, so expats registered in NRW are in scope on the same terms as everyone else.
Your taxable income is EUR 50,000 or less (EUR 100,000 if you are married or in a civil partnership and jointly assessed). This is zu versteuerndes Einkommen, the figure at the bottom of your income tax assessment after deductions, not your gross salary, so more people clear the threshold than expect to.
You can prove that income with an Einkommensteuerbescheid that is no more than two years old. This is the document the application asks you to upload, so dig it out before you start.
The training has to be job-related: connected to the work you do now or to the job you are moving towards. A career change into web development, data and AI, Cybersecurity or UX/UI design counts; the connection is to your intended occupation, not your current one.
One Bildungsscheck per person per calendar year. You cannot claim two of them against the same course to get to EUR 1,000.
The figures on this page are for the Bildungsscheck you apply for yourself as an individual. If your employer is paying for the training, this is not your channel. Ask about the routes for companies on the official NRW page, or look at the Qualifizierungschancengesetz, which reimburses employers 25 to 100 percent of the course fee.
What does the Bildungsscheck actually take off your fee?
Enter your course fee to see what gets paid out, what you are left paying, and how big that is as a share of the fee. On a bootcamp this is a real win but a small one: take it on top of the tax deduction, an employer contribution or a Bildungsgutschein, because those are the routes that move the number.

- These figures are an estimate based on what you entered, not a decision on your application.
- You pay Code Labs Academy the full course fee and the money comes back to you afterwards, once you have submitted the invoice and your proof of participation. Plan your cash flow for the full price.
- The percentage of your fee comes to more than the annual maximum, so what you actually receive is the cap and not the percentage.
This is an estimate based on the figures you entered. It is not tax advice and it is not a funding decision: whether you get a Bildungsscheck and how much it pays is decided by the awarding Bezirksregierung, and what you can deduct on the rest is decided by your Finanzamt. Apply before your course starts and treat the number here as a planning figure, not a promise.
Frequently asked questions
EUR 500 on a five-figure bootcamp: is it worth the paperwork?
For most people, yes, because the paperwork is genuinely small: one online application before the course starts, one upload of your tax assessment, and one submission of the invoice at the end. There is no interview, no advisor deciding whether your career plan is convincing, and no provider approval to chase. What you should not do is treat it as your funding plan. On a EUR 9,000 course EUR 500 is about five percent, so the real money comes from the tax deduction, from an employer, or (if you are out of work) from a Bildungsgutschein. The Bildungsscheck is the easy win you take on top.
Does a live online bootcamp count, and does the provider have to be in NRW?
Online courses are explicitly eligible under Bildungsscheck 2.0, and there is no rule that the provider must be based in NRW or hold AZAV or any other accreditation. What the programme looks at is you: your residence in NRW, your taxable income and whether the training is related to your job or to the job you are aiming for. Code Labs Academy is a German company issuing a normal German invoice, and our courses are live and instructor-led at fixed times rather than self-paced video, which also keeps you clear of the questions that sometimes come up around pure e-learning.
I have already booked my course, or it has already started. Can I still get it?
No, and this is the hard edge of the programme. The application must be submitted before your course begins (at least one day before), and there is no retroactive route once you are enrolled and running. If your cohort starts next week and you have not applied, the honest answer is that this year's Bildungsscheck is gone for that course. What is still open to you is the tax deduction, which needs no pre-approval at all and applies to the whole fee you paid.
What if my application is refused?
Unlike a Bildungsgutschein, this is not a discretionary judgement about your career. It is a check against fixed criteria, so refusals usually come down to something concrete: taxable income over the threshold, an assessment older than two years, residence outside NRW, an application filed after the course started, or a course the reviewer could not see as job-related. Ask for the reason in writing, fix what can be fixed, and if the problem is the job-relevance argument, resubmit with a clearer statement of the role you are targeting and the skills gap the bootcamp closes. If it stays refused, nothing else changes: you deduct the full fee as Werbungskosten, you can still ask an employer to contribute, and you can spread the cost over interest-free monthly instalments paid directly to Code Labs Academy.
I am an expat living in NRW and my German is limited. Can I apply?
Yes. Nationality and language are not eligibility criteria. What counts is that you live in North Rhine-Westphalia, that your taxable income is within the limit and that the training is job-related. Two practical points. The application portal and the official information are in German, so budget some time with a translation tool or a German-speaking friend. And you will need a German Einkommensteuerbescheid to prove your income, which means you need to have filed a return here; if you moved to NRW recently and have never filed one, check with the Bezirksregierung what they accept before you count on the money. Our teaching is entirely in English, which has no bearing on eligibility either way.
I am unemployed. Should I use the Bildungsscheck?
Probably not, or at least not first. If you are registered as unemployed or as a jobseeker, the Agentur für Arbeit can cover 100% of the course fee with a Bildungsgutschein instead of the EUR 500 you would get here. Code Labs Academy holds AZAV Träger- und Maßnahmenzulassung and bills the Agentur directly, so learners funded that way pay nothing. It is a discretionary decision and it is not guaranteed, but the gap between EUR 500 and the full course fee is big enough that it deserves the first appointment. Go for the voucher, and keep the Bildungsscheck in reserve.
