## Interview Prep Series Part 2

Securing a job interview in the tech industry is an exciting step towards building a successful career. However, it can also be nerve-wracking, especially for early career professionals eager to make a strong impression. Preparation is key to overcoming interview jitters and presenting your best self. In this article, we will explore essential tips to help you prepare for the big day and boost your chances of completing the interview smoothly.

### 1. Research the Company:

Before stepping into the interview room, equip yourself with a thorough understanding of the company. Study their mission, vision, values, and recent projects. Familiarize yourself with their industry position, competitors, and any news or updates. This knowledge will demonstrate your genuine interest and dedication to the role.

### 2. Understand the Job Description:

Analyze the job description in detail, highlighting the key skills, qualifications, and responsibilities required for the position. Identify the specific areas where your skills align with their requirements and[prepare examples or anecdotes that showcase your relevant experiences](/blog/job-interview-prep-series). This preparation will help you respond confidently to questions about your suitability for the role.

### 3. Brush Up on Technical Skills:

Tech interviews often involve technical assessments or coding challenges. Review the fundamentals of programming languages, algorithms, and data structures. Practice solving coding problems and explore online coding platforms or websites like [LeetCode](https://leetcode.com/) and [HackerRank](https://www.hackerrank.com/). Stay updated with the latest developments and trends in the tech industry to demonstrate your passion for learning and growth.

### 4. Practice your Responses:

Rehearse your [prepared responses to common interview questions](/blog/job-interview-prep-series) such as "Tell me about yourself," "Why are you interested in this role?" or "Describe a challenging situation you faced at work and how you resolved it." Develop concise, clear, compelling answers highlighting your skills, achievements, and problem-solving abilities. Practising with a friend or [through mock interviews](/career-services) can improve your confidence and articulation.

### 5. Showcase Your Projects and Portfolio:

Early career tech professionals might have limited work experience but can leverage personal projects, internships, or open-source contributions. Prepare a portfolio showcasing your best work, including relevant projects, GitHub repositories, or technical blog posts. Demonstrate your ability to apply your skills in real-world scenarios and your enthusiasm for continuous learning and growth.

### 6. Dress Professionally:

First impressions matter. Dress professionally and appropriately for the interview, aligning with the company's dress code and industry norms. It's better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed. Pay attention to personal grooming, and ensure your appearance is neat and tidy. This also goes for online interviews!

### 7. Prepare for an Online Interview:

If your interview will be through a video call, it’s a good idea to prepare ahead of time and avoid any hiccups on the day of the interview. Plan ahead to ensure you’ll have a quiet and private space with a strong internet connection at least 15 minutes before the scheduled interview. On the day of the interview, ensure your camera and microphone are working correctly, and all configurations are set up for the video conferencing system you’ll be using. Finally, make sure you can open the call link before the scheduled time. You may need to create an account before being able to open the link, don’t let any surprises like this make you late!

### 8. Practice Non-Verbal Communication:

Your body language can significantly impact the interviewer's perception of you. Practice confident posture, maintain eye contact, and offer a firm handshake (if applicable). Avoid fidgeting or crossing your arms, as it may convey nervousness or defensiveness. Radiate positivity and engage in active listening throughout the interview. One psychological trick you can try is to imitate certain interviewer behaviours, such as their level of liveliness or hand gestures. No need to do so to an unnatural level, but keep in mind to adjust yourself responding to the interviewer.

## Press Release: April 28th, 2023

Just over a week ago, Code Labs Academy hosted what will be the first of many CLA Career Chat Events in Berlin, Germany (Check out our upcoming events [here](https://www.meetup.com/code-labs-academy/)!). The[networking event](https://www.meetup.com/code-labs-academy/events/292357585/) took place on Friday evening, where we welcomed ~30 guests eager to learn from our two UX/UI guest speakers, Julianna Dmytryshyna and Sreeja Revur.

The event started off with each speaker introducing themselves and their career journeys up to today. Audience members had the opportunity to ask each of them questions about their professional experiences and also career advice for their own situations. The event ended on a high note, where everyone was invited to stick around for beers and networking (it was a Friday night in Berlin after all!).

UX/UI design networking events are a great way for professionals and those seeking to enter the field to connect, share ideas, and discuss professional challenges those in the field face. At Code Labs Academy, we’re on a mission to reduce the barriers to entry into tech careers, which is why we were so excited to host this free event where attendees were able to gain industry knowledge, participate in engaging discussions, and connect with others in their field.

### Who attended?

Our two guest speakers, Julianna Dmytryshyna and Sreeja Revur, both professionals in the UX/UI Design industry, shared their professional experiences and advice with CLA’s hosts and attendees. Audience members ranged from those who were considering a career switch to UX/UI design, to those who are already in the early stages of their UX/UI design career.

**A little bit about our Guest Speakers**:

Julianna is a creative expert in **User Experience, Visual Design**, and **Digital Illustration** with seven years of experience. With an academic background in Philosophy and Communications-Design, she has worked for different companies and start-ups in Germany, creating and improving user experience and visual identity.

Sreeja Revur currently works as a **Product Designer** at Delivery Hero in Berlin. After moving from India to Germany in 2020, she switched careers from architecture to innovation design management. She combines her passions for design and psychology to create technology and experiences that maximise human potential.

### Why are networking events worth attending?

One of the main benefits of attending a UX/UI design networking event is the opportunity to learn from others in the field. You can gain insights into how other designers approach their work, their tools and techniques, and how they solve common design challenges.

In addition to learning from others, networking events are a great way to build your professional network. You never know who you might meet at an event – you could make a valuable connection leading to a new job or project opportunity.

### What was discussed?

The audience members asked lots of great questions to our guest speakers. Some were more general questions that could apply to any UX/UI design career starter, while others were a bit more personal to their own situation.

Some of our favourite questions asked included:

- While you transitioned from being an architecture professional to entering UX/UI design, did you face any doubts like “why should I do this?” When did you decide on UX/UI design and not architecture?

- How do you find real projects as a beginner?

- How often does this happen [unpaid internship offers], and what should we do?

- How many projects, on average, would you say a beginner should have in their portfolio?

- What is your process for when you have a client, and how do you start a project with them?

- Do you often encounter clients that are stuck on the solutions they have in their minds?

- I’m switching professions, and it feels like I’m starting from zero when I actually have a lot of past experience. Can you talk more about your journey switching from design to UX/UI design?

UX/UI Design Career Chat in Berlin

Cyber Security is definitely one of those careers that people talk a lot about without really knowing anything about how to get into the profession or what people do once there. The overall meaning of the words makes sense, but why are businesses so keen to hire cyber security professionals, and why now?

Let us explain! Investment in cyber security is important for businesses due to the following reasons.

1. ### Cyber Security specialists keep data, information and devices secure

In 2020, on average, every person on Earth created 1.7 megabytes of data each second. (Source 1) In our ever-digitalising, data-first world, this large amount of highly sensitive, protected or personally identifiable information is being used and stored by the businesses we engage with every day.

This data not only needs to be stored somewhere safe for reuse and reference but also securely so that it does not fall into the hands of people who wish to use it illegally or for sabotage.

This is where Cyber Security specialists are hired. They think about the biggest threats to the online security of a company and use their knowledge to build tools, code and processes to defend against malicious methods.

Device security is equally important for similar reasons. Where historically security has meant security guards and identity checks outside buildings, tracking key holders and bolting down desktop computers, the movement of powerful and small digital devices becoming mainstream has meant that this physical security is no longer sufficient.

Device security in the modern world means fingerprint and facial recognition, personal internet connections and secure VPNs and encryption as much.

### 2. Investment in Cyber Security increases consumer confidence

Data leaks are costly and produce significant amounts of uncertainty for customers and employees alike. A few data breaches to have made international headlines in the last few years include:

- **Uber**: In 2016, hackers stole information from 57 million driver and rider accounts and then approached Uber and demanded $100,000 to delete their copy of the data.

Employee directories and internal systems were forced to go offline while an investigation into the breach took place after a hacker made themselves known on their internal messaging systems. They did this by bulk posting messages and images of the stolen data (Source 2).

You would be correct in imagining the kind of travel and personal data that Uber collects to be harmful in the wrong hands. Concerned riders and drivers could use this breach as an incentive to bring their business to less prestigious but more data secure companies.

- **Twitter**: People who are protective of their login and contact credentials became wary of the information they give Twitter as hackers stole the email addresses of more than 200 million Twitter users and posted them on an online hacking forum (Source 3). Like Uber, Twitter relies on users to feel safe posting information about themselves, such as where they are, and their thoughts directly to the platform. Without this, or with reduced traffic, Twitter could suffer significant losses.

### 3. Cyber Security ensures a business's operational safety and consistency

It is not only digital-first companies that are hiring specialists in Cyber Security. Cyber Security is essential to real-world projects as well.

Breaches in critical operation by people without essential training or with malicious intent can cause, arguably, even more, significant problems than those hacking into an entirely digital operation. (Source 4)

For example, cyber security specialists are needed in public and private infrastructure projects to ensure trains will be able to consistently run on time, or that power supplies are regulated without service interruption.

### 4. Investment into Cyber Security strengthens a company’s mitigation and response to cyber threats

From 2022, it is predicted that there will be a 15% annual increase in costs related to cybercrime to companies (Source 5). Cyber Security specialists help companies reduce costs by identifying potential security vulnerabilities and finding solutions to them before they become significant threats.

The maturity and frequency of cyber attacks on businesses have also increased. Technologies and capabilities are making already known forms of attacks, such as ransomware and phishing, more prevalent (Source 5). Cyber Security professionals keep up-to-date with developments in the Cyber Security field, making sure that companies, their employees and their customers are protected against the latest developments and trends in cyber attacks.
