Empowering Older and Low-Skilled Workers with WeGebAU: Advance Your Career through Continuous Training cover image

Continuous training is essential to satisfy constantly evolving requirements in today's dynamic job market. This presents particular difficulties for older and less qualified workers. The WeGebAU program by the German Federal Employment Agency, an acronym for "Further Training of Low-Skilled and Older Employees in Companies," (Weiterbildung Geringqualifizierter und beschäftigter älterer Arbeitnehmer in Unternehmen) was introduced to provide targeted support to these groups.

Purpose and Goals of the WeGebAU Program

The goal of the WeGebAU initiative is to address the skilled labor shortage and increase workers' employability by encouraging their professional growth. This is especially true for older workers over 45, those without a completed vocational training certificate, and those who have not worked in their trained professions in a long time. Through financial aid and support for lifelong learning, the initiative enables employees to advance their credentials without taking on additional debt.

Financing and Support through WeGebAU

Through the WeGebAU program, the Federal Employment Agency pays all or a portion of the costs associated with the training measures. In addition to the actual course fees, eligible costs also include those for transportation, child care, and maybe even meals and overnight stays. Additionally, wage cost subsidies are included in the funding, with the potential to cover up to 100% of low-skilled workers' wages and up to 75% of those over 45.

Requirements for Funding

In order to qualify for funding from WeGebAU, a few requirements must be fulfilled:

  • The training must take place during regular business hours and should result in an improvement in the worker's abilities both within the organization and in the job market in general.

  • For educational funding, both the program and the training provider need to be accredited.

  • For the length of the training, the employer must free the employee from their responsibilities.

Challenges and Future of the WeGebAU Program

The WeGebAU program has numerous advantages, including the ability to adjust to technology changes and boost productivity, but it also has drawbacks, including the requirement for more acceptability and awareness. The program's continued efficacy depends on its ability to continuously modify its training offerings in response to the shifting demands of the labor market.

The German government's plan to improve the professional capabilities of German workers and thereby boost individual and national economies is incomplete without the WeGebAU initiative. It makes sure elderly and low-skilled workers get the help they need to advance in their careers and face the difficulties of a labor market that is changing quickly.
