1. New Launch of Mistral AI's Challenges GPT-4

The Paris-based company Mistral AI introduces Mistral Large, a new language model, and Le Chat, a chatbot service, positioning itself as competitors to OpenAI's GPT-4. Founded in May 2023, Mistral AI rapidly secured astonishing amounts of funding and has now done the shift from open-source models to paid APIs. Mistral Large provides competitive pricing and multi-language support, while Le Chat, currently in beta, offers an alternative to ChatGPT. Furthermore, Mistral AI announced its partnership with Microsoft to distribute its models on Azure, expanding its reach.

2. NASA's CADRE Rovers Prepared for Moon Exploration

The CADRE rover trio has been completed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to showcase cooperative robotics on the lunar surface. The robots are solar powered and will undertake a mission in the Reiner Gamma region of the moon, conducting autonomous experiments and mapping for the equivalent of 14 Earth days (one lunar day). After successful completion of the testing phase in harsh environmental conditions, the rovers are now ready for deployment on a Nova-C lander, launching from NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

3. EU Implements New Digital Markets Act (DMA)

Under the DMA, the European Union has passed strict competition laws that have an impact on well-known digital companies like Apple and Google. Significant changes are brought about by the act, including the ability to download third-party apps and the modification of search results to favor independent websites. Additionally, it makes cross-platform communications possible and might compel streaming services to provide web-based subscription discounts. The DMA represents a significant change in tech regulation with the goal of increasing competition and customer choice and will be sanctioned with heavy fines in case of non-compliance.

5. France Prepares AI Surveillance for Paris 2024 Olympics

France plans to implement AI-driven video surveillance for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, to improve security and prevent incidents. The technology, successfully tested at a Depeche Mode concert, monitors certain scenarios such as crowds surges and abandoned objects. Although facial recognition is still prohibited in this context, right groups remain concerned about potential violations of citizens' rights. The French interior ministry has set up a committee, including CNIL representatives, to monitor the impact of the trial on privacy.
