Meet Proton Scribe: The AI Email Assistant That Prioritizes Privacy

Proton, renowned its suite of privacy-focused applications, has introduced a novel AI-powered writing assistant, Proton Scribe, designed for editing and crafting emails. This tool enables users draft emails effortlessly through basic prompts. Furthermore, it offers functionality to revise and review previously written emails before they are sent. The debut of this tool underscores Proton's commitment to replicating various productivity features from Google, particularly in response to Google's introduction of Gemini AI to Gmail.

Proton Scribe, the new writing assistance tool, is built upon the foundation of Mistral 7B, an open-source language model developed by the French startup Mistral. Proton aims to enhance and customize this model to suit their unique requirements. The main purpose of Proton Scribe is to aid in security and privacy audits conducted by external entities. It is made available to users through an open-source GPL-3.0 license.

One critical feature of Proton Scribe is its capability to operate solely on local devices, safeguarding user data privacy by not transmitting any information off the device. This aspect holds particular significance for corporate users highly valuing data confidentiality and privacy. Moreover, Proton Scribe offers the option to operate on Proton's servers for clients seeking quicker responses, ensuring that no data is stored or disclosed to external entities.

To guarantee that the AI functions solely on the device, users can download the model to their computer/device for local use. Proton highlights that, when operating on Proton's servers, only the prompt given by the user is communicated to the server; no data is retained once the email draft has been created.

In order to ensure that the AI operates exclusively on a local device, users can download the model to their computer or any other device. Additionally, Proton assures that when the AI operates on Proton's servers, only the user's prompt is communicated to the server, and no data is retained after the email draft has been created.

Proton Scribe is a tool that assists users in creating template emails by utilizing prompts provided by the user. However, it does not use personal data, resulting in less personalized responses. To address this limitation, Proton has introduced ‘quick actions’ features that allow users to modify the tone, proofread, and create more concise yet comprehensive drafts. Proton is committed to continuously enhancing Proton Scribe while safeguarding user privacy.

Proton Scribe is currently available for Proton Mail on desktop and web platforms, with future intentions to extend its accessibility to mobile devices. Priced at $2.99 per month for subscribers on Mail Essentials, Mail Professional, or Proton Business Suite plans, it mainly caters to business clientele. However, users on Proton's legacy plans, like Visionary or Lifetime, enjoy Proton Scribe at no additional cost. There is a possibility of extending this feature to other consumer programs based on customer demand.
