Today marks exactly 20 years since Jesse James Garrett invented AJAX, which added a new level of interactivity to web applications. Garrett's AJAX concept was a major contribution to the Web 2.0 paradigm after he founded Adaptive Path, a design and user experience company, in 2001.

Web applications primarily used server-side processing in the early 2000s, resulting in a laborious user experience where every action required loading a new HTML page. Garrett aimed to improve the responsiveness of the web after noticing that desktop programs worked more efficiently.

The introduction of programs such as Google's Gmail and the social network Orkut in 2004 marked a sea change as they demonstrated better interaction design and performance through asynchronous data transfers. By using JavaScript to make HTTP(S) requests in the background, these applications were able to dynamically update the website without requiring a full reload.

[In response to questions](https://www.wired.com/2006/06/ajax/) from customers wanting to use comparable technologies, Garrett argued that JavaScript and XML should be used instead of slower options like Flash that required additional plugins. In 1999, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 had already laid the foundation for asynchronous data transfer with the release of Microsoft.XMLHTTP, initially created to support background HTTP(S) requests.

Looking for a catchy and understandable moniker, Garrett came up with the acronym Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, or AJAX, after realizing how complex the technology involved was. In a [2005 blog post](https://web.archive.org/web/20080702075113/http://www.adaptivepath.com/ideas/essays/archives/000385.php), he introduced AJAX, praising new interaction patterns that later became commonplace in web applications, like dynamic maps and real-time search recommendations.

With its widespread use, AJAX has become a key component of[ Web 2.0](https://www.oreilly.com/pub/a/web2/archive/what-is-web-20.html?page=4), defined by more dynamic, interactive, and collaborative online experiences. As web technology advanced, AJAX's need for XML gave way to JSON, and new interfaces such as the fetch API and single-page application frameworks emerged, continuing AJAX's legacy of providing reliable, offline-compatible online applications.

Although the term AJAX is not used as often today, the interaction patterns it spawned have persisted, radically changing the way online applications work and elevating the user experience to levels that desktop applications once dominated.

CES 2025 Highlights: Major Announcements from Nvidia, Sony, Toyota, and Samsung Cody Corrall 

[Waymo](https://waymo.com/), which is owned by Alphabet, will test its self-driving car technology in Tokyo in early 2025. This will be the first time the company has used its robotaxis on public roads outside the United States. Waymo's road trips project, which aims to adapt its technology to different locations around the world, each with distinct problems, includes expanding to Japan. It will be difficult to navigate left-hand traffic and crowded urban environments in Tokyo.

These experiments, previously targeted on certain weather and environmental conditions – such as the intense heat of Death Valley, California, or torrential rains in Miami – were carried out in a dozen American cities. Buffalo, Washington, D.C., Las Vegas and Seattle were all used as test cities. In each city, Waymo typically starts with a small fleet and maps the terrain by hand before moving to autonomous testing under human supervision.

Waymo is collaborating with local taxi operator Nihon Kotsu, which will oversee and maintain the Waymo fleet, and with taxi app GO for its trials in Tokyo. In order to map important parts of Tokyo, including Minato, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Chiyoda, Chūō, Shinagawa and Kōtō, Nihon Kotsu drivers will first drive the cars by hand. Additionally, Waymo and Nihon Kotsu are working closely to train their employees to drive Jaguar I-Pace self-driving cars.

This news follows [GM's statement](https://news.gm.com/home.detail.html/Pages/news/us/en/2024/dec/1210-gm.html) that its Cruise robotaxi development was ending, as well as the cancellation of a planned autonomous ride-sharing service in Japan with Honda. The cancellation comes after Honda, Cruise and GM jointly [announced in October 2023](https://techcrunch.com/2023/10/18/gm-cruise-and-honda-to-launch-robotaxi-service-in-japan/) that they would launch a robotaxi service in Tokyo in 2026 with Cruise's specially created robotaxis, The Origin.

Bitcoin Surpasses $100,000 Amid Growing Market Momentum

The provider of data backup and recovery solutions [Clumio](https://clumio.com/) has been acquired by [Commvault ](https://www.commvault.com/)for an unknown amount. The purchase will be financed by Commvault's current cash reserves and is projected to completion by early October. It is not expected to have a material effect on the company's profitability.

Clumio is a Santa Clara-based company that was founded in 2017. Its primary focus is on safeguarding [AWS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Web_Services) workloads, but in 2020 it will also offer Microsoft 365 support. With a 400% rise in yearly recurring revenue from 2022 to 2023, the company has grown significantly and drawn in well-known clients including Atlassian, Duolingo, and LexisNexis. Prior to this transaction, investors like Index Ventures, NewView Capital, and Sutter Hill Ventures contributed $261 million to Clumio's venture capital fund.

By combining Clumio's cloud-native technology, the acquisition will allow Commvault to improve its cyber resilience products, especially for AWS users. The purpose of this action is to give businesses more options in an increasingly risk-laden and competitive market for safeguarding and recovering data and cloud-native apps.

According to KBV Research, the ransomware threat and incidents like data center disasters are included in the worldwide data backup and recovery market, which was estimated to be worth $12.9 billion in 2023. The market grew at a compound annual growth rate of 10.9% between 2017 and 2022. The [EU AI Act](https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_24_4123) and other new rules are placing more stringent restrictions on data management, which is driving up demand for reliable data protection solutions.

This acquisition expands upon Commvault's earlier acquisition of Appranix, a provider of cloud app resilience, earlier in the year and comes after the company's impressive Q1 results. Commvault was initially established in 1988 as a division of Bell Labs. In the late 1990s, the firm broke out and went public in 2006. Over time, Commvault has strengthened its position in the data protection and cyber resilience industry by making a number of significant acquisitions, such as the cybersecurity startup TrapX and the software-defined storage startup Hedvig.

Commvault Expands Cyber Resilience Capabilities with Strategic Acquisition of Clumio


Thanks to a new cooperation between Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks, drivers along the I-5 corridor between Washington and California will soon be able to charge their electric vehicles while enjoying a cup of coffee. [The plan](https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2024/starbucks-and-mercedes-to-install-ev-chargers-at-starbucks-stores/), which was unveiled last Wednesday, calls for the installation of 100 fast chargers at Starbucks shops across the country, starting with the Interstate-5 region on the West Coast.

Although the sites are still unknown, the corporations intend to focus on underprivileged communities and key cities along the 1,400-mile path. These 400-kilowatt Alpitronics versions of chargers may increase battery life by 70% in just 20 minutes and work with a variety of EV voltages and types.

This partnership responds to the growing need for quick-charging electric vehicle (EV) stations along I-5, a busy highway that connects Canada and Mexico and travels through important cities including Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco. This initiative is opportune as the use of electric vehicles rises, especially in states like California and Washington. California and Washington have the greatest rates of EV adoption. In fact, California alone is home to 36% of all EVs registered in the United States. Furthermore, [by 2035](https://www.cnet.com/home/electric-vehicles/states-banning-new-gas-powered-cars/), Washington, Oregon, and California want to sell solely gasoline-free vehicles, which is in line with objectives shared by at least nine other states.

The program backs a larger, publicly sponsored project headed by Washington's Department of Transportation to create a green highway along the West Coast. A federal program to increase EV charging infrastructure and ease the transition of consumers and companies to electric vehicles is scheduled to provide the state with $71 million. One of the main components of these efforts is improving the alternatives for charging on interstate roads, such as I-5.

Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks both have high climate targets. Mercedes-Benz intends to run all of its global operations entirely on renewable energy by 2039, while Starbucks expects to cut its emissions by half from 2019 levels by 2030. Previously, on the 1,350-mile route from Seattle to Denver in 2022, Starbucks and Volvo [collaborated to build 60 EV chargers](https://www.geekwire.com/2022/get-a-jolt-starbucks-and-volvo-reveal-cities-where-ev-drivers-can-charge-up/) at 15 Starbucks sites.

Mercedes-Benz [said in November 2023](https://www.mercedes-benz-mobility.com/en/who-we-are/stories/first-ev-charging-hub-in-north-america/) that it will invest $1 billion to create a charging network across North America, with assistance from Goldman Sachs subsidiary MN8 Energy. Starbucks provides parking places; the cost of the installations is covered by this collaborative venture.

In launching the new initiative, Starbucks Chief Sustainability Officer Michael Kobori emphasized the company's historical commitment to bringing clean energy and renewable projects to underprivileged regions.

The corporations refrained from revealing the expenses associated with this particular endeavor or the quantity of chargers slated for the West Coast. Phases two and three will include East Coast locations.
