With the acquisition of Verta, an AI startup, Cloudera has added cutting-edge AI capabilities to its data platform. After raising $1 billion, the well-known Hadoop company Cloudera went public in 2018 and was later acquired by a private equity firm for $5.3 billion in 2021. Verta is an expert in managing large language models (LLMs), which are crucial for generative artificial intelligence.
Following its acquisition, Cloudera launched a SaaS data lakehouse and realized it needed to incorporate AI features to stay competitive. Charles Sansbury, CEO of Cloudera, emphasizes that AI is the future of data management and that they are interconnected, underscoring the tactical significance of obtaining Verta's Operational AI platform.
Verta, which acts as a command center for various technologies, has changed from overseeing task-based models to concentrating on massive language models. With the addition of outstanding personnel, such as co-founders CEO Manasi Vartak, an MIT CSAIL alum, and CTO Conrado Miranda, a former machine learning lead at Twitter, Cloudera's AI capabilities are further enhanced by this acquisition.
Having raised close to $16 million since its founding in 2018, Verta played a key role in the creation of the open-source ModelDB database, which tracks machine model revisions. As data processing needs and technology changed over time, Cloudera—which was founded in 2008 with a primary focus on Hadoop—moved from on-premise solutions to competing in the cloud space with a SaaS data lakehouse. With this most recent acquisition, Cloudera is attempting to stay up with rivals who have also increased their AI capabilities, such as Databricks and Snowflake.
