Retrain full-time and keep drawing your paro

In Spain you can study a full-time bootcamp while your unemployment benefit continues to be paid in full. Read this part before anything else: the paro pays your living costs while you retrain, it never pays the tuition, and it keeps running only while you keep meeting every obligation of your acuerdo de actividad.

What the paro really does for a career change, and what it does not

Start with the limit, because it decides whether this page is useful to you. The prestación por desempleo is income replacement, not training funding. It pays you, monthly, so that you can live while you are out of work. It does not pay Code Labs Academy, it will never pay Code Labs Academy, and there is no version of this route in which the state covers your tuition. Anyone who tells you the paro can be used to buy a private course is describing a different programme or is simply wrong. What is true, and genuinely valuable, is the other half: Spanish law does not make you choose between drawing your benefit and studying. The prestación contributiva and the subsidios continue at the same amount and for the same duration while you study, including full-time study, including a private school, including one based abroad that teaches live online. There is no authorisation to request, no form to file about the course and no provider requirement anywhere in the rule, because the rule governs you as a claimant and says nothing at all about the school. That is what makes a full-time bootcamp survivable: for the months your benefit runs, your rent and your food are covered while you spend your days learning something that changes what you can be hired for. Treat the end date on your benefit resolution as the real deadline of your career change and plan the cohort around it. The risk on this page is not the studying. It is everything you still owe the system while you study. The acuerdo de actividad you signed does not pause: you stay registered as a demandante de empleo, you renew that registration on time, you attend every appointment SEPE or your regional employment service gives you, you stay genuinely available for work, and you accept both suitable job offers and any training the office assigns you. Being in class is explicitly not an excuse for missing an appointment or turning something down, and refusing an assigned course can get your benefit suspended or extinguished. So tell your office what you are studying rather than hoping it never comes up, and read the last tab on this page as carefully as the first. As for the fee itself, that is a separate problem with a separate answer, and it is covered below: interest-free monthly instalments paid directly to us, a discount for paying upfront, the discounts already published on the site, and the employer route once you are back in work.

Frequently asked questions

Will SEPE pay for the bootcamp?

No. This is the question people arrive with and the answer does not have a hopeful version. The prestación por desempleo replaces part of your income; it is not a training budget, it cannot be redirected to a provider, and we cannot invoice SEPE. The public system does fund training, but through its own courses delivered by centres inscribed in the Registro Estatal de Entidades de Formación and its regional equivalents, and Code Labs Academy is not inscribed there. So the honest split is this: the state covers your living costs while you retrain, and the tuition is arranged separately. On our side that means interest-free monthly instalments of up to 60 payments paid directly to us, a discount for paying the fee upfront, and the discounts already published on the site.

Do I have to tell SEPE that I am studying?

There is no form that asks you to declare a private course, and enrolling does not change your entitlement, so nothing obliges you to announce it the day you sign up. Tell them anyway. Your obligations as a claimant continue in full while you study, and the practical difference between an office that knows and an office that does not is whether your appointments and any assigned training can be arranged around your class hours. Bring the enrolment confirmation, the schedule and the total hours to your next appointment and ask for it to be noted in your file. The version of this that goes wrong is always the same one: a claimant who said nothing, missed a citation because of a class, and had no standing to explain it afterwards.

What happens if a class clashes with a SEPE appointment, or they assign me a course?

Deal with both in advance, because neither is forgiven retroactively. For a clashing appointment, contact the office as soon as the citation arrives and ask to reschedule; requested early this is routine, and missing it without notice is treated as non-compliance regardless of what you were doing. For assigned training the stakes are higher: refusing a course offered by SEPE or your regional service can suspend or extinguish your benefit, and being enrolled with a private school is not a legal excuse and does not count as an equivalent. Never refuse outright. Explain what you are already doing, show the schedule and the hours, and ask whether the assignment can be adjusted, deferred or reconsidered in view of it. If it cannot, you are choosing between the assignment and your benefit, which is exactly the choice you avoid by raising the bootcamp with your orientador early.

Does it matter that Code Labs Academy is a foreign, private, online school?

Not for your benefit. The compatibility rule governs your conduct as a claimant, not the credentials of whoever teaches you, so there is no accreditation gate to pass and no approved-provider list to appear on. Studying with us is treated exactly like studying with a Spanish academy, an open university or nobody at all. Where our status does matter is the separate question of public training: we are not inscribed in the Registro Estatal de Entidades de Formación, so our courses cannot be delivered as a SEPE or regional course and cannot be bonificadas through Fundae. That is why this page is about protecting your income while you retrain, and not about getting the state to buy the course.

What if my benefit is refused, suspended, or runs out before the course ends?

If your claim is refused or a sanction is imposed, you can challenge it: the route is a reclamación previa to the same body that issued the decision, and the deadline is stated in the resolution letter itself, so read that letter carefully and act quickly rather than waiting for advice. Regional employment offices, unions and free legal aid services all deal with these routinely. If instead your benefit simply runs out mid-course, which is the more common situation, the course does not stop with it: our monthly instalments are interest-free and can run up to 60 payments, so the amount per month is designed to survive a change in your circumstances. Talk to us before you fall behind rather than after, because payment plans are easy to adjust in advance.

How do people actually pay the tuition while living on the paro?

Usually with a combination, and it is worth planning it on the funding call rather than improvising. The order that tends to work: check first whether an employer is in the picture, either the one you are about to join or a former employer funding an exit, since employer-paid training in Spain is tax-free for you and deductible for them and it covers the entire fee (the details are here); if you invoice as an autónomo, training related to your activity is a deductible business expense, so part of the cost comes back through your IRPF; then use our own interest-free monthly instalments of up to 60 payments, paid directly to Code Labs Academy, which is what most people on a benefit end up choosing; if you have savings, compare that against the discount for paying the full fee upfront; and ask which of the discounts published on the site apply to you, because several people qualify without realising it. As an employee in Spain you cannot deduct a course you pay for yourself, so do not build a plan around a refund that will not arrive.
