Turn your BFD budget into a tech career

Leaving the Bundeswehr? Your BFD education budget (roughly EUR 5,000 to 21,000+ depending on years served) can fund a full Code Labs Academy bootcamp, taught live online, during or after your service.

What is the Berufsförderungsdienst der Bundeswehr?

The Berufsförderungsdienst (BFD) is the Bundeswehr's own vocational advancement service. Under the Soldatenversorgungsgesetz (SVG), soldiers on temporary contracts (Soldaten auf Zeit) build up a statutory education entitlement that scales with years served: roughly EUR 5,000 after four years, in the region of EUR 13,000 at SaZ 8, and EUR 21,000 or more at SaZ 12 and above. BFD does not only teach in-house: it routinely approves and pays civilian training providers directly for measures that fit the individual Förderungsplan, and IT and programming retraining is one of the classic destinations. Instructor-led live online training is fundable, which matters for a provider like Code Labs Academy: our bootcamps run remotely, in real time, with a teacher in the room. Two things we want to be straight about. First, there is no blanket approval. BFD decides each measure individually, against your career goal and your Förderungsplan, and your Berufsförderungsberater has the final word. Second, we have taught soldiers before but we do not yet have a confirmed BFD-funded cohort on record, so nobody here can tell you the answer is a formality. What we can do is put a complete, credible file in front of your advisor: curriculum, contact hours, dates, a firm price quote and our AZAV certification, which is a recognised quality signal in Germany even though it is not what decides a BFD case.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if BFD turns my course down?

It is not the end of the road. Ask your Berufsförderungsberater for the reason in writing. Very often it is the fit with the Förderungsplan, the timing, or a file that was too vague, rather than the course itself. All three are fixable, and we will rework our documentation and speak to your advisor directly if that helps. If it still does not go through, you can self-fund: Code Labs Academy offers interest-free monthly instalments paid directly to us, a discount for paying upfront, and we are happy to invoice an employer if you have already lined up a civilian job. If you have left service and are registered as a jobseeker, the Bildungsgutschein is a separate route worth asking about.

Does an online bootcamp count, or does it have to be in a classroom?

BFD does fund instructor-led online training and regularly contracts civilian providers that deliver this way. Our bootcamps are live and remote: fixed timetable, a teacher present, real cohorts. They are not a library of recorded videos you work through alone. That distinction is the one that matters in the approval conversation, so make it explicitly. It also removes the classic obstacle of there being no suitable provider near your garrison or your home town. Your BFD office still decides your individual case.

Can I train while I am still serving, or do I have to wait for Dienstzeitende?

Both are possible in principle. Using the entitlement during service (dienstzeitbegleitend) is a well-established route and your pay continues, but it depends on release from duty and on what your unit and your advisor agree. The Bundeswehr side of that is out of our hands. Many soldiers instead use the window after Dienstzeitende, while receiving Übergangsgebührnisse. Our courses run to a fixed weekly schedule, so bring the exact timetable to your advisor: it makes the release question concrete rather than hypothetical.

How long after leaving the Bundeswehr can I still use my entitlement?

The entitlement is usable for a number of years after Dienstzeitende, commonly around seven, depending on your status and contract. We deliberately will not quote a date for you: the binding figure is the one on your own file at your BFD-Beratungsstelle, and it is worth asking for it in writing the moment you start planning. Work backwards from that date, not forwards from today, because the measure has to be approved and started inside the window.

My budget does not cover the full course price. What then?

It happens, particularly with shorter contracts and our longer programmes. BFD can fund up to your remaining entitlement; the difference is yours to cover. We will tell you the exact gap before you commit and you can close it with interest-free monthly instalments paid directly to Code Labs Academy, with our upfront-payment discount, or through a future employer who agrees to contribute. Nothing is signed until you know the real number.

Does Code Labs Academy's AZAV certification mean BFD will approve me?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. AZAV is the German quality certification for publicly funded training providers, and holding the Träger- und Maßnahmenzulassung tells your advisor that our courses, teaching and administration have been audited to a recognised standard, which helps. But BFD approval is an individual decision made against your Förderungsplan, your remaining entitlement and your career goal. No certification, and no promise from a provider, can substitute for your Berufsförderungsberater saying yes.
