A free, simple speed test
This tool helps you troubleshoot connection issues, optimise your setup, or simply understand your connection performance. For the most accurate results, close downloads and streaming apps, pause cloud backups, and avoid large uploads during the test. If you’re on Wi‑Fi, try moving closer to your router — or, ideally, test again using an Ethernet cable. You can run the speed test as many times as you like.
How the measurement works
During the test, our server sends small data packets to your device and measures how quickly they travel back and forth. Multiple packets are sent to ensure the measurement is long enough to be accurate. Your download and upload speeds are calculated from the transfer time, while ping and jitter reflect responsiveness and stability. For best results, avoid browsing, streaming, or checking email during the test, as the tool uses available bandwidth.
What the results mean
This speed test measures four key parts of your connection: download speed, upload speed, ping (latency), and jitter.
-
Download speed: How fast data moves from the internet to your device (Mbps). Higher download speeds help with tasks like streaming, loading websites, and downloading files.
-
Upload speed: How fast data moves from your device to the internet (Mbps). Upload speed matters for video calls, sending large files, screen sharing, and cloud syncing.
-
Ping (latency): How long it takes for data to travel to a server and back (ms). Lower ping means a more responsive connection — especially important for live classes, calls, and online collaboration.
-
Jitter: How consistent your connection is over time (variation in packet timing). Low jitter supports smooth video calls, stable audio, and reliable real-time collaboration.
Run a few tests for a clearer picture
A single speed test can be influenced by temporary factors like network traffic, device performance, or server load. For a more reliable result, run the test a few times at different moments (for example: morning, afternoon, and evening) and compare the averages.
If you’re joining live online learning from Portugal, this test is a helpful way to confirm you can comfortably attend video sessions, share your screen, and collaborate without interruptions. If your results fluctuate, try an Ethernet connection, reduce background downloads, or check your router placement.
