A simple, free internet speed test
This tool helps you diagnose connection issues, optimise your set-up for online learning, or simply understand your internet performance. For the most accurate results, close any downloads, streaming services, or background apps that use the internet. Some security software (VPNs, antivirus web filters, or network monitoring tools) can affect results—if you temporarily pause them, make sure you switch them back on immediately after the test.
How the measurement works
Our server sends data packets to your device to measure performance. We test with multiple packet sizes and repeat transfers long enough to get a reliable reading. The time it takes to download and upload the packets determines your results. For the best accuracy, avoid browsing, downloading, or checking email during the test, as the speed test uses most available bandwidth.
What the results mean
This speed test measures four key parts of your connection: download speed, upload speed, ping (latency), and jitter.
-
Download speed: How quickly data travels from the internet to your device (Mbps). Download speed matters for streaming, loading websites, and downloading files.
-
Upload speed: How quickly data travels from your device to the internet (Mbps). Upload speed is important for video calls, screen sharing, and sending large files.
-
Ping (latency): How long it takes for data to travel to a server and back (ms). Lower ping generally means a more responsive connection for live classes, video calls, and online collaboration.
-
Jitter: How stable your connection is over time (variation in packet arrival). Lower jitter helps keep video calls smooth and reduces audio dropouts.
Run multiple tests for more accurate results
A single speed test result can vary depending on network congestion, Wi‑Fi signal strength, device performance, and server load. To get a more accurate picture, run the test a few times at different moments (for example: morning, lunchtime, and evening) and compare results.
